Book two in the Bound to Fire and Steel series, QUEEN OF DREAMS is an epic fantasy with strong erotic elements. Kit Rocha is an author duo (co-writing team Donna Herren and Bree Bridges) that I have long been a huge fan of. I cut my teeth on their first erotic series, the Beyond series, set in a dystopian future world. Rocha does amazing world-building with captivating characters and tons of action, as well as erotic romance that ignites off the pages.
In the Bound to Fire and Steel series, there are gods created by the world eons ago who have amassed great magical power. The first in this fantasy series, CONSORT OF FIRE, had tons of intrigue and secrets, one of my favorite things in any genre. And also lots of jaw-droppingly steamy sex involving Dragon god Ash, his new consort Sachielle, and Sachi’s lover (and assassin) Zanya. Now, QUEEN OF DREAMS dumps us immediately into the action, requiring familiarity with the previous CONSORT OF FIRE.
This book had a lot fewer erotic scenes than book one, CONSORT OF FIRE. There are a couple of love scenes at the beginning, and then we don’t get another until 88% of the way into the book. Given the authors, I was surprised at the dearth of sex in QUEEN OF DREAMS. Instead, we’re mostly treated to a magical world of battling pantheons.
Zanya came into her powers as the reborn Endless Void in book one. Now we see Sachi ascend to her powers as the Everlasting Dream while she is held captive by the bitter foe of Ash and his allies, an evil god known as The Betrayer. Sachi and Zanya embody the world’s forces of creation and destruction, and they are such great foils for one another. Most of QUEEN OF DREAMS is about the battles between the opposing good guys of Ash and compatriots versus the evil Betrayer and his created evil shadowgods.
This duology is a great story arc overall, but I preferred the pacing and the storyline more in book one, QUEEN OF DREAMS. Despite this, QUEEN OF DREAMS provides plenty of magic and plush sensuality in an alluring fantasy world. I’ll happily devour anything Rocha writes, and I’m hoping they may branch out into the world of QUEEN OF DREAMS for future books.
Three lovers with unbridled hope, uncanny dreams, and ancient powers join forces against the greatest evil in the world in a scorching fantasy by the authors of Consort of Fire.
Ash waited three thousand years for a consort who could break the Betrayer’s chains. Instead of one lover, he found two: Sachi and Zanya—the primordial powers that embody creation and destruction, reborn as humans. Now, his ancient enemy has returned to threaten everything he loves.
In the wake of her dazzling manifestation, Zanya seethes with magic and restless energy. Her command of the Endless Void will be a potent weapon in the coming war. To harness it, she’ll need to embrace the darkness within—but the scars of the past are holding her back.
Sachi’s unprecedented connection to the Dream deepens, leading her beyond the veil of reality…and into the heart of the Betrayer’s stronghold. Torn from her lovers, Sachi must use all her wit and cunning to survive the Betrayer’s treacherous court. Because he doesn’t simply want her. He covets the slumbering power she possesses—and plans to take it for his own.
