"Homicide cop Eve Dallas stands for one of her own cops"

Fresh Fiction Review

Payback in Death
J.D. Robb

Thriller Police Procedural | Romance Suspense

Mega author JD Robb brings another solid futuristic romantic suspense entry in PAYBACK IN DEATH, book number fifty-seven in the long-running and well-beloved In Death series.  Robb is the pen name of romance bestseller Nora Roberts, and no matter which name she is writing under, Robb brings her "A" game.  It's hard to believe that this series has been going on since 1995--it still feels so fresh and engaging.

Set in the near future, in 2061, there are just enough technical advancements to make this feel futuristic but not so many as to make it feel out of reach.  Eve Dallas is a lieutenant in the homicide division of the New York Police and Security Department.  Eve and her trusty partner Peabody have caught a new case: the death of retired Internal Affairs Bureau captain Martin Greenleaf.  Greenleaf was of course, as an IAB officer, resented by much of the police force, especially those whom he investigated for being dirty cops.  Which one of his prior arrests may have come back to haunt him?

Dallas does her usual bang-up job of intuiting the killer, and while the mystery is fairly easy to follow and unravel, the real delight is in the many interactions between Dallas and the many beloved supporting characters in this series.  Dallas' billionaire husband Roarke continues to spend more and more of his time acting as a civilian consultant for the NYPD, working with his wife to investigate homicide cases.  I adore the relationship between Dallas and Rourke!  Roarke's background as a criminal mastermind and an IT genius continues to serve him and Dallas well, and his competence and caring are so sexy.  This series is like a cozy pair of pajamas on a winter's night, enveloping the reader in the snuggly warmth of family and friends.  The continuing happily ever after of Dallas and Roarke (and of some of the secondary characters as well) adds to the feeling of comfort and pleasure.

PAYBACK IN DEATH is sure to please readers looking for mystery, romance, and a little futuristic fun.

SUMMARY

A retired colleague falls victim to a staged suicide in Payback in Death, the next police thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author J.D. Robb.

Lt. Eve Dallas is just home from a long overdue vacation when she responds to a call of an unattended death. The victim is Martin Greenleaf, retired Internal Affairs Captain. At first glance, the scene appears to be suicide, but the closer Eve examines the body, the more suspicious she becomes.

An unlocked open window, a loving wife and family, a too-perfect suicide note—Eve's gut says it's a homicide. After all, Greenleaf put a lot of dirty cops away during his forty-seven years in Internal Affairs. It could very well be payback—and she will not rest until the case is closed.
