ONCE MORE UPON A TIME by Roshani Chokshi features the second chance love story of Imelda and Ambrose, who first found love, then had it taken away by a curse, and now embark on a journey where they just may find it again. This was told in traditional fairy tale format, and it definitely captured the swept-away feel. Imelda and Ambrose had good chemistry, and I enjoyed their love-to-hate-to-love romance. For a short story, this had a build where you slowly saw each character thaw towards the other. Hateful thoughts gradually turned; first to tolerance, then to a sort of begrudging love.
Ambrose had always played second (or third) fiddle to his brothers, and Imelda wanted to escape the confines of her father and what she pictured her marriage to Ambrose would be. They fit each other well in what they ultimately were to each other and what they wanted to be for each other. There wasn't a whole lot of world-building in this little nugget of a story, but there was enough to make it magical. I especially loved Ambrose's horse cloak. It was such a fun element and never failed to make me chuckle. The badger was certainly an interesting character as well, and I did like that twist in the story and what it meant that Imelda was not taken for a fool. But then, she never was. The princess definitely saves herself in this one!
ONCE MORE UPON A TIME was a light fantasy story with a lot of humorous elements. If you're looking for a quick, sweet read to capture your heart, you'll find it here!
