Thriller Psychological | Suspense Women Sleuth | Action

TOWARD THE LIGHT is Bonnar Spring's debut novel. It is an exciting tale of hate, betrayals and getting even. After seventeen years of waiting, Luz Conception is ready to avenge the murder of her beloved father who was killed by a machete wielded by Martin Benavides, former President of Guatemala and controller of a major drug network. It is time for Luz to return to Guatemala and settle an old debt. She and her mother witnessed the brutal and deadly assault on her father while fighting erupted in the background from the political guerrillas. She and her mother were helicoptered to safety.

Richard Clement is the settlement officer who sends Luz and her mother are sent to live in New Hampshire in the United States. Richard takes personal responsibility of Luz for years while he became a CIA agent and never failed to remember her birthday and Christmas and always listened to her hopes and dreams. When her mother passes away from cancer, Richard is near and listens to her plans to get even with Martin Benavides. She will return to Guatemala so she can kill Martin and Dominga Benavides. Then she will scatter her mother’s ashes as she requested and begin her new life. Richard offers to help her by sending her to Miami because he has his own reasons to get rid of Benavides. Equipped with training from the CIA, Luz is ready to put her plans into action.

The action begins as soon as she arrives and it is fast and frantic. She goes undercover as the nanny to the grandson of Benavides, Cesar. Luz is also befriended by Richard's nephew, Evan McNamara, an ex-pat painter living in the city. They become friendly and meet at the market every morning as her plan to assassinate gets closer.

However, nothing is as it seems and everyone around her is lying to her. What is going on? Who can she trust? She feels an attraction to Evan but he has a girlfriend, and only wants sex from Luz and to paint her. A web of lies and soon Luz is confused about her death wish for Martin. His son, Robert, almost rapes her and when she steals some important data from his briefcase, and it becomes obvious Bobby is really involved big time in the drug deals. Needing help, Luz tries to find her cousin, Tono, leader of the guerrillas movement. She is followed and Tono is seriously wounded. Who followed her? Why?

Luz’s dark journey toward the light aptly is the title for this complex thriller filled with characters that keep you guessing who to trust. A wild helicopter ride leads up to a terror-filled ending, filled with twists and turns and many questions. TOWARD THE LIGHT is an exciting beginning for Bonnar Spring. What is next? I will be waiting. You have a new fan.

SUMMARY

Luz Concepcion returns to Guatemala to murder Martin
Benavides, the man who destroyed her family. Benavides,
who rose from insurgent fighter to president, controls a
major drug network. Robert Clement became Luz’s
resettlement officer when she was evacuated to the U.S.
He now works for the CIA, which has its own reasons for
eliminating Benavides. Robert’s team persuades Luz to
pursue a job as nanny to Benavides’ grandson, Cesar, a
lonely child with an absentee playboy father. The
Guatemala contact for her mission is Evan McManus, an
expat painter who pursues Luz, hoping to persuade her to
model for himβ€”and more. Luz initially spurns his
advances, but her first terrifying encounter with Martin
Benavides propels her into his arms. Complicating
matters, Luz conceals from all sides her clandestine
contact with her surviving cousin, Antonio Torres, a
guerrilla leader fighting the government propped up by
the Benavides and their drug money. Her plans unravel as,
bit by bit, Luz learns that nothing is as it seemsβ€”and no
one is telling the whole truth.
