In the second book of Studies in Scandal, Ms. Collins has introduced a hero whose mathematical skills put her far above the norm. As one of the heiresses who has inherited Beauchamp House, Lady Daphne Forsythe has been able to escape an intolerable family situation. Lady Daphne's genius in mathematics doesn't extend to her social skills. She doesn't understand why people are offended by her comments. She shares the house with four other women, three of whom have their own skills that set them apart. When Lady Celeste left them the house, none of them knew what they would face. Lady Celeste left clues for Lady Daphne leading to a Jacobin treasure. Only with someone with her skills, will be able to interpret the clues left behind. She is determined to find the treasure.
The Duke of Maitland was a nephew of Lady Celeste. He stays at Beauchamp House to protect the ladies after his cousin's bride was shot. He is also drawn to Lady Daphne. He seeks to ease her way as she solves the clues and to protect her when someone from her past is discovered dead in a hidden room in Beauchamp House.
Ms. Collins' series is a delight to read. Each of the women is so different and keep the reader guessing what will happen next. Watching Lady Daphne's attempts at getting the Duke into her bed is an amusing past time as well as watching her mind work. There is a great camaraderie between the four women and the men who love them.
