Fresh Fiction Review

Sweet Ruin

Fantasy Urban | Romance Paranormal

SWEET RUIN is the thirteenth book in the Immortals After Dark series and it introduces some new characters to the series. Josephine is actually Thad's older sister and we see her in the beginning when her life changes and she becomes this inexplicable "superhero". These first couple of chapters has a different pace than the rest of the book. If you're familiar with Kresley Cole's YA stories, her voice here is much like that. A little more flamboyant and therefore, more choppy. Once we get into the more present day events, the writing reminds me more of the author's erotic romances instead of following the same vein of the previous Immortals After Dark books. For me, this was the biggest issue. I'm not a fan of this style of writing. It comes off as choppy and no matter how much I enjoyed the characters and the events that happened in the book, the pace just seemed too broken up for me to really sit back and enjoy the ride.

However, that is not to say that I didn't enjoy the characters. Jo is a spitfire character who enjoys toying around with a more serious guy like Rune. What's different about SWEET RUIN is the fact that Jo is quite clueless to the supernatural world. She doesn't even know that she is a vampire until she is lured in by Rune's poisonous blood. From there it's a quick and furious ride of passion.

Another character that gets some page time in this book is Nix. She is a reader favorite but it isn't until now that we can see some of her more unique abilities. Cole is still building her world and it is definitely the most complex in the paranormal romance genre. Greater things are approaching, and I cannot wait to see what will happen next.
