In the second book of the Original Heartbreakers series, Gena Showalter
takes two very flawed characters and redeems them. What I have discovered
about this series is that the author is very much taking characters who have
rough pasts and tries to give them a happily-ever-after that is worthy of
them.
The heroine, Harlow Glass, was a former bully so while many people hate her,
Showalter tells her side of the story and provides details about Harlow that
we didn't know before. It puts things into better perspective and
creates a fun book because now Harlow is trying to win back the affections
of the people she has wronged in the past.
The same thing goes for the hero, Beck Ockley. Beck is a hot and cold kind
of guy. Sure, his smile can make the panties drop but he's a "one and done"
kind of guy, meaning he only has one-night stands and doesn't follow
through with relationships or emotions of any kind. So the dynamic
between the two is fun and engaging because they're so different in
personalities. Naturally, their narrations put a smile on my face because
Showalter is just so good at creating fun moments that bring out the best in
her characters. This is especially important for this couple because they
haven't been painted in good light before.
I've been a fan of Gena Showalter for years but I think her humor and her
writing style really fits the Contemporary Romance genre. It's so easy to fall
in love with Showalter's writing and her characters!
