A SCOUNDREL BY MOONLIGHT

Romance Historical

Eleanor "Nell" Trim is sitting with her sister, Dorothy, who is dying after trying to give birth. With her last bit of strength, Dorothy implores Nell to find the scoundrel who seduced and abandoned her, and to enact some revenge by making public some diaries that detail all his exploits and would ruin him. The man Dorothy names is the Marquess of Leath. Determined to find the diaries, Nell obtains a position in the Marquess' household as a maid. Impressed with her education, the Marquess' mother soon takes Nell as a companion, which is ideal, as it gives Nell more latitude to search the home for the diaries. Then the Marquess returns home.

James Fairbrother, the Marquess, is a politician with high ambitions. He hopes to fulfill the dreams his father never was able to accomplish, and his mother desperately wants for him. We find out immediately that James' evil uncle has been using James' name as he played his wicked games of seduction and abandonment, leaving a long trail of ruined women and illegitimate children in his wake. However, Nell doesn't know this. James is immediately suspicious of Nell, as he finds her searching his home at various times. He tries to convince his mother to fire her, but she won't do it. Eventually, James' secretary suffers an accident and can't work, and Mother suggests that the ideal temporary fill in is Nell. James is desperate, and agrees, both because he DOES need help, and he can also keep an eye on her.

As James and Nell work together, their opinions begin to change. Nell sees James as the hard working, dedicated, and honorable man that he really is. Can he really be the debauched seducer her sister named? James is soon enthralled with Nell, and she with him. Before their attraction barely has a chance to blossom, new evidence comes to light, fueling Nell's doubts once again. The actions Nell takes are very painful to read, and left me wondering how on earth this could be fixed.

What I love best about A SCOUNDREL BY MOONLIGHT (aside from James, who is a wonderful hero) is the issue of how difficult it will be for this couple to have a life together, if they can overcome the initial conflict. James is a high ranking noble with great political aspirations, and Nell is merely a soldier's daughter who would only be a liability to him. A life together will be difficult, and Anna Campbell doesn't gloss over that, which I loudly cheer. I thoroughly enjoyed this compelling and sometimes painful read, and it's a terrific addition to the Sons of Sin series. Recommended.

SUMMARY

Anything can happen in the moonlight . . .

Justice. That's all Nell Trim wants-for her sister and for
the countless other young women the
Marquess of Leath has ruined with his wildly seductive ways.
Now she has a bold plan to take
him down . . . as long as she can resist the scoundrel's
temptations herself.

From the moment Nell meets James Fairbrother, the air
positively sizzles. Yet for all his size
and power, there's something amazingly tender in his touch.
Could he really be such a depraved
rogue? The only way to find out is to beat the devil at his
own game . . . one tempting kiss
at a time.

EXCERPT

The stables, Alloway Chase, Yorkshire, October 1828

β€œThank you,” Miss Trim said drily. β€œI don’t need to learn to
ride.”

β€œYou lost that argument yesterday.”

Her lips firmed. β€œOnly because you asked me in front of your
mother.”

This time Leath couldn’t contain his amusement. β€œI’ve
learned a few tricks from my years in politics.”

She almost smiled. An almost smile from Miss Trim was more
dazzling than the sun. β€œI’ll have to be on my toes, I see.”

She would indeed. Or she’d be on her back.

Luckily, he was saved from making that wish reality when a
groom led out her pony. β€œMiss Trim, allow me to introduce
one of nature’s gentlemen, Snowflake.”

At his name, the fat, white pony nodded his shaggy head.
Miss Trim laughed. β€œI had nightmares about this. Snowflake
isn’t exactly what I imagined.”

β€œI’ve decided to save the fire-breathing monster for
tomorrow.” Leath thanked the groom and took the reins. β€œHave
you ever been on a horse?”

β€œNo.”

He regarded her searchingly. β€œYou’re not really frightened,
are you?”

β€œNo.” She hesitated. β€œMaybe. Yes. A little.”

β€œYou’re close to the ground on Snowflake.”

β€œEasy for you to say.”

He laughed again. β€œDo you need me to help you up?” Snowflake
was too small for a woman of Eleanor’s height, but Leath
wanted her first ride to soothe her fears.

β€œI think I can manage.”

Pity. His hands itched to circle that willowy waist.

Snowflake stood while Miss Trim settled gingerly on his
back. Leath was surprised at her uncertainty. He’d believed
her completely indomitable. This vulnerability was
dangerously appealing.

He passed her the reins and she grabbed them so hard that
Snowflake whickered in protest. Knowing that contact was a
mistake, Leath placed his hands over hers. β€œGently.”

β€œSorry,” she muttered and sat stiff as a board in the
sidesaddle as he checked her stirrups. She wore half boots,
and when he twitched away the voluminous red skirts, a
glimpse of white stocking crashed through him like a cannonball.

He stepped back. β€œHow do you feel?”

She looked very unsure. β€œLike I’m sitting on a volcano
that’s about to erupt.”

He snickered. β€œOld Snowflake is pushing twenty, Miss Trim.
If he erupts, it will be into a mind-numbingly speedy stroll.”

β€œThat’s scary enough.”

β€œCourage. If you can face down a cranky marquess, this old
pony is a doddle.” He patted Snowflake, who looked half
asleepβ€”so much for Miss Trim’s worriesβ€”and took the halter.
β€œAre you ready?”

β€œNo.”

β€œYou can’t sit in the stable yard all morning.”

β€œIt’s my first lesson.”

β€œSo start learning.” Clicking his tongue to the somnolent
horse, he moved forward.

β€œOh, dear.”

He glanced back. Miss Trim clutched the front of the saddle
as though about to topple off. She looked utterly terrified.

β€œDeep breath.”

β€œI think you should stop.”

β€œI think you should let yourself fall into the rhythm of the
horse.”

β€œPlease don’t say β€˜fall.’”

He laughed again. Good God, at this rate, he’d be the life
of the party once he got back to London. β€œSomeone as
graceful as you should have no trouble riding. Listen to
your body.”

Damn it, if she didn’t want to hear β€œfall,” he didn’t want
to hear β€œbody.” Teaching Miss Trim to ride was a risky
enterprise. If only for her instructor.

Slowly he walked around the yard without looking back. He
needed to get himself under control before he chanced
another glimpse. When he finally did, he was pleased to see
her sitting more naturally. β€œThat’s better.”

β€œI still feel like I’m about to end up on the cobbles,” she
admitted, although she didn’t look nearly so frozen.

β€œYou’d have to jump. Snowflake’s back is broader than most
chairs.”

β€œA horse armchair?”

He smiled, charmed, and wishing to Hades that he wasn’t.
β€œPrecisely.”

He led Snowflake around the yard again, then stood back to
let Eleanor try on her own. As he’d expected, she quickly
adapted to the horse’s gait. A quick learner, Miss Trim. He
knew that from working with her.

Inevitably, the idea of her being a quick learner here
inclined his thoughts toward another kind of riding. With
her mounted upon the Marquess of Leath rather than a fat,
phlegmatic pony who hadn’t accelerated past a trot in ten
years. The sensual daydream of watching her undulate over
his body occupied him to a point where he stopped watching.

β€œMy lord?” She and Snowflake halted a few feet away.

β€œHow was that?”

β€œI’m getting used to it.”

β€œYou’ll come to like it.”

β€œPerhaps.” Although he was pleased to see her lean to pat
Snowflake’s white neck.

β€œGo around the yard again, if you please.”

He smiled at her growing confidence. As for her riding
something other than a horse? The wicked idea arose that
where there was a will, there was a way. Surely one could
avoid scandal, if one was careful. Perhaps he was too
punctilious about protecting Miss Trim’s virtue.

After all, she had a perfect right to say no to any offer.
