OPERATION ONE NIGHT STAND is Book one in the Operation> series by Christine Hughes. This is not a traditional romance. OPERATION ONE NIGHT STAND is more in the vein of SEX IN THE CITY. There is a lot of sexiness and a happy ending with a thoroughly charming guy, but the focus is on one woman's journey navigating a career and relationships with a lot of support from her friends.
Caroline Frost is a flawed and sympathetic character. The five years spent with a jerk of an ex and the subsequent messy breakup threw her for a loop and messed with her self- confidence. I love the strong relationships Caroline has with her two best friends Sarah and Melody and the support they give each other. Rather than wallowing in self-pity, bitterness, or male-bashing, the advice Caroline's friends offer is often very pragmatic and helpful -- and just sometimes a little goofy.
I like that Caroline gets herself together professionally and her focus isn't just on finding a new romantic relationship. That being the case, there are a lot of sexy encounters she has along her path of self-discovery which make OPERATION ONE NIGHT STAND fun to read. I like that there is a lot of humor throughout the story. The relationship Caroline develops with the man she eventually winds up with happens very organically and I love the chemistry between them. Once they finally get together, the sparks really start to fly. One scene in particular is incredibly erotic and satisfying after so much flirtation throughout the book. The ending wraps up some loose ends and makes sense for the characters.
OPERATION ONE NIGHT STAND is a fun, seriously hot story about a woman's journey through life. I liked the pacing of this book and never thought it lagged. There is a good balance of romance, sexiness, and the trials of everyday life. I look forward to the next book in this Operation series by Christine Hughes to see what's in store for Caroline's friends.
None of it mattered. As soon as I gave notice, the great weight of sadness that weighed me
down lifted off my shoulders and my attitude changed. In that moment, I decided that βpoor
meβ was no longer my battle cry. Melody and Sarah were right. I was twenty-eight with my
whole life ahead of me. Who was I to ignore that?
βDid you have to get her fired?β Steven interrupted my silent hear-me-roar mantra.
βI didnβt do anything. I just quit my job. Looks like she had the same idea. End of story.β
βCareββ
βSteven.β I glared at him, wishing actual daggers would shoot from my eyes and hit him in
the face.
Dropping his shoulders, he looked at me one last time. βIt didnβt have to be this way.β
βThere is no other way for it to be. You made sure of that when you fucked the intern in
our bed while I walked around oblivious with a two-carat engagement ring on my finger. Who
does that? A douche bag, thatβs who. Now, please, close the door on your way out. I have
work to do.β
βWho are you? My Caroline doesnβt talk like that.β
βYour Caroline doesnβt exist anymore. Read the obituary. It reads: βHere lies Stevenβs
Caroline. F**ked over by a pretentious douche bag and his plastic intern.ββ
I was a bit alarmed at how good it felt to tell Steven what was on my mind. His gaze fell
to the floor and his shoulders sagged. He opened his mouth to speak again but must have
thought better of it.
It felt even better when I watched him close the door.
As soon as he left, I picked up the phone and dialed Sarah, knowing she was on her way
home.
βDid you do it?β Sarah asked in reference to part one of the plan.
βI did. And Betsy the Wonder Slut quit too.β
βA nice extension of the plan. I wasnβt expecting that.β I heard her chewing.
βNeither was I. And I told off Steven. I am so amped.β
βExcellent. Adrenaline is a beautiful thing.β
βWhat are you eating? Itβs awfully loud.β
βCarrots. Not everyone can eat six million gallons of ice cream in a six week period and
still have a great ass.β
βTrue. So listen, Iβve been giving it a lot of thought and I think part two of the plan
would be good for me.β
βSo youβre in?β
βIβm in.β
βExcellent.β
All weekend, I was inundated with a three-part plan. Melody and Sarah had done quite a bit
of thinking and came up with, what they deemed to be, a full proof method for helping me to
move on. Part one was complete. I quit my job. Iβll find a new one. Especially with the
help from the very kind human resources manager.
βJust so you know,β Sarah continued, βthere is an addendum to the plan. Chapter one point
five if you will. You gave two weeks notice? You donβt have to stay longer than that,
right?β
βNo. Iβm done the Friday before Thanksgiving.β
βGood because the three of us are spending Thanksgiving in Jamaica.β
βWhat?β
βWe all need to decompress, Care. I need to get away from school, Mel needs to back away
from her job for a bit and you need, well you need this too. Iβm not taking no for an
answer. Iβm booking the second I get off the phone with you.β
I guess spontaneity was the lesson for chapter one-point-five of the plan. βBook it.β
Part two was a little dicier, a little less old me and a lot more new me. But then again
Operation: One Night Stand was a go and I had two weeks to get up the nerve to go through
with it. At least Iβd be on a plane out of town soon after so Iβd be able to obsess about
it in a different country.
I was going to step out into the sun and live my life. And Iβd spend a week in Jamaica with
my two best friends doing just that.
