The opening of this Promise Harbor Wedding story is
dramatic, with a wedding about to take place when an old
flame of the bride's walks into the church and insists on
speaking with her first, carrying her out the door in his
arms. Then we go back to the previous day and see how all
this came about. Jackson Knight is coming home to the town
after damaging his knee in top-league hockey. He's going
to be best man for Josh, and if it wasn't for that he'd
stay away. A hockey player gets too much attention, too
many eager girl fans, called puck-bunnies. He gets too much
sympathy for having BUSTED his knee. And losers picking
fights.
Detective Hayley Stone has worked hard on her image, not
easy when everyone in town knows what she got up to as a
girl. Jackson doesn't recognise Hayley when they meet, but
then she used to dress like a Goth in high school. She's
less than impressed. As the groom to be does his ritual
round of bars, he confesses to Jackson that he might be
having doubts - not about Allie, his bride, but about
marriage itself. Meanwhile Jackson can't get away from
sport references, even from Hayley - "Are you going to open
the door or are you waiting for a ref to blow a whistle
first?" she demands. But Hayley, tired from a shift and
plumbing and painting at home, has to attend a witness to a
robbery. There's been a spate of robberies of tourists
lately, and no suspects are presenting themselves. She and
Jackson didn't notice each other much at school, and that
still suits her fine - and then she has to arrest him for
assault, hours before the wedding.
A modern comedy of manners, this story by Sydney Somers has
engaging characters and instant dilemmas, a kitten stuck in
a tree and the ghosts of relationships past. "I was young
and stupid," Hayley dismisses an early boyfriend, but many
people turn out differently when they mature. The lady
barely has time to think about a relationship, with family
responsibilities, a tough job and someone taking personal
revenge on her home. Jackson, drifting in and out of town
with a coaching future lined up, doesn't seem ideal, but
then again, he won't be expecting commitment - all he wants
is someone to keep the eager girls from asking him to
autograph their breasts. Hayley thinks she's worth more,
but can't find it. So we see the two dance around each
other in this adult romance BUSTED which is a good read and
serious fun.
Hockey star Jackson Knight has a hundred reasons not to
return to Promise Harbor, but none of them are good enough
to get him out of attending his best friend’s wedding. Even
with a career-ending knee injury, every puck-bunny in town
will be gunning for him.
Worse, getting a pair of cuffs slapped on him at the
bachelor party could ruin any chance of getting back in the
game, even as a coach. Unless he can convince the arresting
officer to smooth things over—by going to the wedding as his
date.
Hayley Stone figures posing as Jackson’s girlfriend is the
least she can do to salvage his reputation. Plus, having a
man with a toe-curling smile on her arm will keep her ex off
her back.
What starts as a simple plan to deflect small-town pot-shots
unexpectedly becomes a sizzling night that hits Jackson like
a full-body-check to the heart. Now he’s determined to prove
that she’s the best reason of all to come home—for good.
Warning: Contains a fiery powerplay both on and off the ice,
skin-tingling forced intimacy, interfering grandparents,
bear costume hijinks, a haunted house and the kind of
game-changing chemistry worth fighting for.
