Though Carrie has involuntarily joined the ranks of the
undead, she still clings to the tattered shreds of her
humanity. With Cyrus, her first sire, dead, Carrie settles
into a comfortable routine with her new sire and lover
Nathan. Inexplicably, Nathan becomes possessed and starts
killing humans, so a bounty is put on his life. His friend,
Max, is ordered to terminate on sight. Not trusting Max to
get the job done, the "Voluntary Vampire Extinction
Movement" hires another assassin to make sure the kill
order is carried out. Then Carrie discovers that Cyrus is
still alive and, along with Nathan, part of the plan for a
master vampire, known as the Soul Eater, to become a god.
Now, even though Carrie hates and fears him, Cyrus has
become key to Nathan's survival. She races across country
to kidnap him and bring him home.
Abandoned, betrayed and then murdered by his fledgling,
things couldn't get much worse for Cyrus. Oh wait, yes they
can. His father, the Soul Eater, hires a witch to bring him
back through the veil and into the world from which he was
so rudely and painfully expelled. And the irony keeps on
coming. Cyrus has come back as a human. Cyrus is a key
ingredient in his father's master plan, and with a nickname
like the Soul Eater, you know dear old dad's not planning
peace on earth, good will towards men. Struggling against
his humanity, Cyrus seriously thinks about killing the
woman who once betrayed him and now has rescued him from
the gang of vamps keeping him prisoner in the desert. For
Cyrus' rescue has come at a terrible price and he places
the blame squarely (and rightfully) at Carrie's door.
After Cyrus' rescue/kidnap, he and Carrie race back to
Michigan where Max and a rogue werewolf assassin, Bella,
have captured Nathan and are keeping him sedated. Once they
decipher the hex that's been cast on Nathan, the four of
them come up with a crazy and dangerous plan to break the
Soul Eater's spell. Once again, a terrible price is
demanded of the group.
Violent, exhilarating and heartbreaking. There's the
struggle to retain humanity even as it slips steadily away.
The struggle for redemption. A once-bad man trying to be
good. A woman in love with a man who still loves a woman
dead many years.
Unrequited love, lost love and love rejected. This is a
familiar story in many respects if you're a fan of vampire
fiction, but it's a good story and one well-told. No final
conclusion at the end of POSSESSION; there's still more to
tell as these lonely people, who once were a strong unit
separate to walk their separate ways and prepare for a
final and climatic meeting with the Soul Eater.
My father always said fear was a weakness. Well, that's
easy to say when you don't have to worry about vampire
slayers or holy water. I hate fear, but undead life goes
on. In the two months since I was attacked in the hospital
morgue and turned into a vampire, I've killed my evil sire,
Cyrus, fallen in love with my new sire, Nathan, and have
even gotten used to drinking blood. Just when things are
finally returning to normal--as normal as they can be when
sunlight can kill you--Nathan becomes possessed. And then
he slaughters an innocent human.
Now it's my job to find Nathan before the Voluntary Vampire
Extinction Movement does, because they're just waiting for
an excuse to terminate him--and anyone foolish enough to
help him. But it gets worse. It turns out that Nathan's
been possessed by one of the most powerful and wicked
vampires alive--the Soul Eater. And who knows what vile
plan he's concocted?
With the Soul Eater and my possessed sire on the loose, I
have a lot to fear. Including being killed. Again.
