Cody Carlyle isn't one to take guff from any man. She's quick with the derogatory statements and slow on the compliments. It leads to a lonely existence, but one she's familiar with. Hired as a freelance bounty hunter, she's good at it. It isn't just about the rush she gets from the job or the good money, but the sense of justice in the profession.
Josh Pierce is an ex-cop, working to save enough money as a bounty hunter until he can open his own PI business. He's new in the business, but his quick brain and aptitude have made him reliable. It doesn't hurt that he's also very nice on the eyes.
Eric, their employer, has been unintentionally double booking hunters on assignments, and they've been after the same skip. Not a bad thing when Cody finds herself in a back alley taking down a perp and on the wrong end of a gun. No longer restrained by the ethical limitations of the law, Josh takes down the second brawler. Struggling to unwind, Cody joins Josh for a beer and a game of pool at the bar. Josh encourages Cody to succumb to a few hours of passion. Cody's not stupid. The man can pick any woman, so why her? It doesn't stop her from tasting him.
Cody won't back down from anything, except confronting her mother about alcoholism and her absentee father. This time when Cody visits her, her mother is acting maternal. Not at all like herself. She even reveals a little information about Cody's father. Because of her mother's delicate frame of mind, Cody asks Moji, her friend, to check in on her and leaves with Josh to hunt for their biggest skip yet, Adam Sinclair.
Cody's met her match with Josh. Their one night of sex hasn't been enough for either of them. They want to experience it again, and then again while tracking Sinclair. Following his trail to Mexico, they are arrested. Playing off the cuff, Josh tells Captain Hector Gonzales they're eloping and have no family. Instead of letting them go on their 'marry' way, the Captain befriends them. The festivities begin for a quick, but traditional wedding. What seemed like a simple plan becomes a source of lies. But who is lying to whom? How will they get out of it? Do they want to? Is there anything behind the lust? What will happen when their temporary partnership concludes with the return of Sinclair? Will Josh disappear like her father did to her?
Karen Kelley's, HELL ON WHEELS is filled with sexual heat between the characters: Josh and Cody; however there is little else other than sex between the two dimensional characters. I didn't see the build up of suspense and conflict unless there was a predictable foreshadowing. Although the scenes were well written, they were interspersed with so many sex scenes it wasn't until half way into the book, that finally I cared what would happen, but by then as my guesses were confirmed my interest in the happily-ever-after ending quickly dwindled.
No doubt about it: Cody Carlyle is the hottest bounty
hunter around with a well-deserved reputation for bringing
in the toughest skips. If sheβs learned one motto in this
businessβand in lifeβitβs this: never turn your back.
Never give an inch. And never, ever offer your heart.
Fellow bounty hunter Josh Pierce has had his eye on Codyβs
every luscious curve for quite some time. The hunky ex-
undercover cop would love to show her that some things are
worth believing in, things like the kind of ecstasy heβd
happily show her in bed. Hey, fighting this kind of white-
hot attraction is just wrong. So why not give in to a
little Josh Pierce temptation? Why not share one amazing,
toe-curling night of indescribable, head-scrambling
passion and then walk away, no hard feelings? But the
night they spend together is beyond amazing. Itβs sheer
bliss. Not that it could ever happen again. Could it?
What was supposed to be a one-time deal is quickly
becoming a very tempting habitβone they could stop at any
time, of course. Like after the next time. Or maybe next
weekβno rush. Suddenly, two bounty hunters who never
believed in anything are open to everything, scared of it
all, and ready to discover what happens when you go after
the biggest catch out thereβ¦true loveβ¦
