In the summer of 1967 two young women meet in the Hamptons. Margot, a daughter of privilege, is there for the summer. Thea, a full-time resident of the Hamptons, comes from a working-class background. Living with her younger sister and stepfather, her life couldn't be more different than Margot's. In spite of this, the two women become very close until one act of violence changes everything. It would be ten years before they would see each other again. The reason? Margot needs help from Thea. Why does Margot feel she can reappear in Thea's life after having vanished ten years ago with no explanation? Perhaps the bigger question is whether Thea will help her.
ALL THE SUMMERS IN BETWEEN, by Brooke Lea Foster, is told in dual timelines, 1967 and 1977. What readers learn about Margot comes from Thea. Thea knows that Margot lies to her and is less than trustworthy. Even Thea wonders why she puts up with it. Even so, a bond forms and they grow closer and closer. While the past plays heavily in the narrative, there is much in the present to examine. By 1977 Thea is a wife and mother and what Margot is asking of her can put her family in a compromising situation. Perhaps it is Thea's desire to be more than she is or the mystique Margot brings with her that leads Thea to consider helping her friend. Is it worth the risks?
The author has skillfully crafted a story that delves deeply into a friendship that may have seemed symbiotic. The story is thought-provoking in that it raises questions about friends and the obligations that people might assign or expect.
I found ALL THE SUMMERS IN BETWEEN to be an interesting and engrossing book.
