Mason spends his days playing his guitar and performing at
jazz bars in the San Francisco area. Most nights are late
ones for him, but he doesn't mind because he enjoys what he
does. Mason used to work as an enforcer, who made sure that
people who have and use magic stay within the rules and
boundaries proclaimed by their unique society. Mason also
has a bit of magic at his disposal and a very particular pet
named Louie. To anyone else, Louie may look like an everyday
type of dog, but he is what is known as an Ifrit, a Djinn of
legend. Not many practitioners like Morgan have an Irfit,
but he is one of the lucky ones.
One night when Mason is leaving his latest gig, he is
threatened by a creature that has been conjured from magic.
Moran can't think of any enemies he has that would want to
harm him so he gets in touch with his old mentor and friend,
Eli. Morgan's old boss Victor is also interested in what
Morgan has seen and soon he is back into the world of dark
magic. Even his former lover Sherwood decides to help out
with this motley crew and soon there are more strange
happenings all over San Francisco. As Morgan continues to
investigate, he is attacked and almost killed by an unseen
enemy who has some very powerful magic at his disposal.
There is a villain in their mists called Christoph who is
power hungry and will do anything to rule over his fellow
practitioners. He also grabs local Irfits and tortures them
to give him this power he so desperately wants. It is up to
Mason to try and stop him, even though Mason rather pluck
away at his guitar in a smoky bar. But when bodies start
piling up and Sherwood goes missing, Mason must use his
untapped power to defeat Christoph.
DOG DAYS is told in the first person point of view by Mason,
who is the type of guy who likes to go with the flow. He is
not one with a lot of responsibility, and prefers it that
way, but when a magic crazed individual starts to threaten
Morgan and those around him he cares about, he is right
there to do what he can to help out. The action is non-stop
and the characters are an interesting bunch which include
Morgan's good friend Eli, Victor his former boss who is a
tad eccentric and Mason's new lover, Campbell, a witch with
great healing powers.
John Levitt has a nice voice and is an excellent
storyteller. The character of Mason seems so real and his
easy going demeanor pulls you into the story. The action is
taut and the atmosphere is filled with magic and mayhem. If
you are a fan of fantasy with a touch of mystery, DOG DAYS
is the book to read.
First in a new urban fantasy series-with a bite as magical
as its bark.
Mason used to be an enforcer,
ensuring that suspect magic practitioners stayed in line.
But now he scrapes out a living playing guitar. Good thing
he has Louie, his magical...well, let's call him a dog. But
there are some kinds of evil that even Louie can't sniff
out. And when Mason is attacked by a supernatural assailant,
he'll have to fall back on the one skill he's mastered in
music and magic-improvisation.
