Romance Paranormal

Eternal Love comprises two novellas, Eternity and Infinity. These are both reprints of stories that were previously published in the '90s.

Eternity

In Eternity, we meet Raven St James, a young witch sentenced to death by an evil priest named Nathaniel Dearborne when she and her mother are blamed for the illness that erupts in their town. Only one man, Dearborne's protégé, Duncan Wallace, tries to stop the murder and even he is powerless to stop the angry mob demanding vengeance. Raven and her mother are hanged in front of their neighbors.

What Raven doesn't knowis that she will wake up hours later, even though her neck was broken. Before she can think about the import of this, she rremembers that her mother told her to retrieve a diary from her home, which informs her that she is an immortal High Witch, and now that she has died she will no longer age and her powers will increase. Her mother also warns her that she is a witch of the Light, born because she tried to save another witch's life in the past, but that there are Dark Witches who will try to come and steal her heart, the only way that they can sustain their immortality. Raven runs to her aunt in the town of Sanctuary, Massachusetts, where she plans to make a life for herself and make sense of her new identity.

She is followed by Duncan Wallace, who finds himself drawn to the mysterious beauty. Duncan finds her again in Sanctuary and the two fall in love. Raven also finds another high witch, Arianna, who teaches Raven the things she needs to know to survive. When the villagers in Sanctuary become suspicious of Raven, they contact Dearborne to come rid them of the witches. Unable to wait for his arrival, the townspeople throw Raven to her death (not realizing she will wake up) and Duncan follows in an attempt to save her. Though Raven knows that Duncan will be reborn as an immortal witch of the light for his attempt to save her life, she doesn't know how long she will have to wait until they reconnect... she only knows that she's willing to wait an eternity

Infinity

The second novella, Infinity, tells the story of Arianna, who is first introduced in Eternity. Arianna is from a Scottish town called Stonehaven where she is considered an outsider because she hangs out with the Crones, a group of old women who the townspeople believe to be witches. Arianna is also considered an outsider because after the death of her sister she spends a lot of time alone and wandering in the cemetery.

When one of the chieftain's cousins, Nicodimus Lachlan, arrives, he knows that Arianna is an immortal high Witch like him. He does not know how to stop her from being so willful and potentially getting herself killed by practicing spells and wandering alone. When one eager lad decides to cut Arianna to see if she bleeds, Nicodimus and the chieftain decide that for her own good, the girl must marry. She says the only man she will have is Nicodimus. So they marry.

Nicodimus refuses to tell Arianna of her true nature, even though he knows he is a hunted man. One of the oldest immoral witches in existence, there are many who would kill him to take the strength in his heart⎯not the least of which are his mortal enemies Kohl and Marten. When these men intrude on the sanctuary he's found in Stonehaven, Nicodimus knows he'll have to kill them. What he doesn't know is that they have joined forces with Nathaniel Dearborne to try to take his heart and they will do anything to get it⎯even use Arianna as bait.

This is the first Maggie Shayne story that I've ever read, but I have to say I enjoyed her writing style. Eternity and Infinity were two very different stories, but each was enjoyable. These are older stories, but they are both well written and entertaining. It was nice that the two stories were connected, but they were also two very separate tales. I think fans of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series and Cheyenne McCray's Magic series will enjoy this book.

SUMMARY

Two passionate paranormal romances in one volume from the New York Times bestselling author.

In Eternity, readers will savor the story of Raven St. James, whose unearthly beauty brought accusations of witchcraft-and a sentence of death. Luckily Duncan, the town minister, saved her life. But Raven could not save him. Now, after three centuries, Raven has found Duncan in the body of a man who has no memory of their past. As Duncan slowly reawakens, they are once more endangered by the evil that tore them apart.

Infinity tells the enthralling tale of Nicodemus Lachlan, who lay dormant in the Scottish Highlands for five centuries after his one love betrayed him. The only thing he remembers is Arianna, the golden-haired lass who touched his soul-and her treachery, which cost him his life. But when Arianna finds a way to bring back her love, the dark power that reunited the two threatens all they hold dear.
