Seventeen-year-old Jared Hamilton's life of isolation and privilege ends during a heated argument with his cold- hearted father in which Jared believes he has inadvertently committed murder. Terrified and alone, Jared flees the mansion, and becomes the prime suspect until the real murderer is caught. In the meantime, Jared finds himself living on the streets of Denver, where he meets PJ, a thirteen-year-old girl whose mean-spirited mother refuses to let her come home. Together, they work to survive life on the streets, but after Jared's half-sister, Victoria, rescues them and sends PJ back to her mother, Jared never hears from PJ again.
Fifteen years later, Jared is a partner with his sister's husband John in Semper Fi, a private investigative firm in Denver, and through grit and hard work, PJ has left the trailer parks of her youth behind and become Priscilla Jayne, one of country music's hottest rising stars. Their paths cross again after PJ receives negative press when she fires her mother as her manager, and her mom begins spreading rumors about PJ's unreliability. PJ doesn't want to tell the press the truth; that her mother, who has never loved her, was embezzling PJ's money. So when Jared suddenly turns up at PJ's hotel room door, she's thrilled, at least until she learns the real reason he's there; he's been hired by PJ's record label to be her watchdog during her upcoming concert tour. PJ is furious; she prides herself on her professionalism, and being dogged by Jared wherever she goes makes her feel like a child. Even worse, her long-buried feelings for the boy she knew, the one whom she believed had forgotten about her once he had a loving family, are still smoldering, and the strong, silent man at her side is making her burn.
Jared isn't sure how he feels about his new assignment. Seeing PJ has reminded him the hurt that followed her abandonment all those years ago, and he wants to keep himself emotionally detached. But spending so much time with her makes him realize that PJ's professional attitude is rivaled only by her kind heart, and he informs both the record label and PJ that he's calling it quits; at least until PJ receives a threatening note from a potential stalker. Suddenly, PJ needs a bodyguard, and Jared knows that he's the only man for the job. The question is, can he guard both PJ and his heart?
COMING UNDONE, the follow-up to Susan Andersen's popular trilogy (GET LUCKY, HEAD OVER HEELS, HOT & BOTHERED), is a winner. Readers who have been waiting for Jared and PJ's story won't be disappointed. Much to my delight, Ms. Andersen minimizes the glamour of PJ's lifestyle, preferring to show the warm relationships with her band mates, her fierce determination in the face of adversity, and her love of music that have brought her the success she richly deserves. Add to that the sensual but misunderstood and emotionally battered hero, Jared, and you have all the ingredients for a passionate tale. While summer may be over, this book generates enough heat to melt a glacier. Enjoy!
