Linda Dahl
My latest novel, "An Upside-Down Sky," is a travel romp in an imaginary Southeast Asian country with serious consequences for the mismatched group on the tour, with an unexpected finale that gives the protagonist, a failed Latina artist, a new perspective and hope. I've also written a trilogy of novels that can stand alone: "Gringa in a Strange Land"; "Cleans Up Nicely"; and "The Bad Dream Notebook," a short story collection, "Come Back, Carmen Miranda: Stories about Latin America," and three books about women and jazz: "Stormy Weather," a history of women in jazz; "Morning Glory," a biography of the phenomenal musical talent Mary Lou Williams; and "Haunted Heart," about the tragic life of the gifted singer Susannah McCorkle. I've also written "Loving Our Addicted Daughters Back to Life," a guidebook for parents.
I'm fortunate to do the work I love and to have garnered praise for my books. Among stellar reviews, the "New York Times Book Review" chose "Morning Glory" as a Notable Book of the Year for 2000 and "Gringa in a Strange Land" was chosen by the editors' consortium Writers in the Sky as best fiction of the year, 2010. "Publishers Weekly" called "Stormy Weather" a brilliant work of oral history' and "Loving Our Addicted Daughters" 'a compassionate and invaluable guide.'
Before I wrote books, I traded on my degree in Latin American Studies and love of jazz as a freelance journalist in Mexico, Peru, Brazil and New York. Like most writers, I've done a bunch of gigs to support my writing - working as a translator, enduring a typist's job at a wine store because of the excellent discounts on their products, and lastly, teaching English as a Second Language as an adjunct professor.
I live in Riverdale, New York, by the Hudson River and close to Manhattan.
