In this piece for Fresh Fiction, Stefan Kanfer, author of The Eskimo Hunts in New York and The Eskimo Hunts in Miami, shares some background on Cuba and Miami and how they tie into his latest thriller.

The Caribbean was front and center in the 1960s, when the Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba failed, strengthening the new Castro regime and embarrassing the Kennedy administration as well as the CIA.

But historical memory is short, and after several decades, the only people who commemorated the Cuban incident were those who had triumphed (Castro and his fellow revolutionaries) and those who had failed (the Cuban exiles who were captured, imprisoned, executed or repatriated to the U.S.—principally to Miami.)

I have been going to Miami for decades—my grandparents retired to a place near Miami Beach. What began with idle curiosity became something of an obsession through the years. After interviewing those on both sides, taking copious notes, and haunting various libraries, I thought it was time to put the matter in fictional (i.e. thriller) form. At the center is protagonist Jordan Gulok, who had starred in an earlier adventure, THE ESKIMO HUNTS IN NEW YORK. There, in one of the severest winters on record, a time when the subways, buses, and even the police were paralyzed, he single-handedly exposed and nailed a group involved with contraband pharmaceutical medicines.

But in Manhattan, Jordan could be at his ease during an ice storm—after all, he had grown up in the Arctic. In Miami, home to so many Cuban exiles, the weather is quite another matter. Oppressively hot, sun-dazzled, sub-tropical, it's pleasant enough for a vacation—which is what Jordan originally planned, thawing out from the New York City caper.

But all too soon, the ex-navy SEAL stumbles across an enigmatic organization known only as the 417. Before long, he learns that a counter-revolution is under way, involving the robbery of army depots, the murder of U.S. soldiers, and the purchase of ordnance and planes from foreign sources. Unfortunately, his theory about all this is only that—speculation. The Pentagon refuses to help until he furnishes proof. So once again, Jordan is on his own, facing an implacable well-armed group bent on vengeance and destruction at any cost. This time out, however, he does have help in the form—the very attractive form--of a Haitian singer. Can an Inuit, incongruously placed in one of the hot spots of the South, aided only with his brains, a Stoeger pistol, and a beautiful girlfriend, head off a diplomatic crisis before it explodes on the world stage?

TWO commenters will each win a set of the bound editions of THE ESKIMO HUNTS IN NEW YORK and THE ESKIMO HUNTS IN MIAMI, US addresses

You certainly give a good cultural clash, which I really enjoy reading, so I'll look out for your works.

Your story lines have to be some of the most unusual that I've come across in quite a while, and that's what has drawn me in. I think that both books are going to be real page-turners, which will make for great reading to wind up the Summer!! These aren't par-for-the course books that you'll find on the shelf having to do with ex-Navy seals, and I also love the fact that you're jumping around from one part of the Country to another. You've also given the main character a minority that few are familiar with. I'm very anxious to read your books. Even the covers have beautiful artwork on them, which is an added plus!! Congratulations, and I know how I'll be spending the rest of my Summer!!
