Kelley Armstrong is back with another installment of
her Women of the Otherworld series. It's been 15 years
since Elena Michaels was BITTEN by Clay, her werewolf
lover. Their story continued in STOLEN, and now with the
third book in their saga, BROKEN, the couple gets ready for
a new phase in their life together -- parenthood.
Contracted to steal the infamous Jack the Ripper "From
Hell" letter from a Toronto sorcerer, Elena and the pack
are led to believe the job will be a snap. No trouble at
all for a clever pack of weres. And that assertion appears
to be true - at first. The theft goes off without a hitch.
Trouble starts when Elena accidentally gets a drop of blood
on the letter, which turns out to be a trigger that opens a
portal to Victorian London. A couple of Zombies come
through along with their controller, who's possibly none
other than "Saucy Jack" himself.
Where zombies walk, can mayhem be far behind? The rotting
undead roaming the streets unchecked is bad enough, but
this pair's brought a whole slew of Victorian diseases with
them. Outbreaks of cholera, typhus and syphilis soon have
the city in a panic. Did I mention the psycho killer rats?
The zombies are obviously stalking Elena, and the pack
circles to protect her, assuming that the rapidly
decomposing couple is after the Ripper letter. It's almost
too late in the game when Elena finds out that the prize
the controller is really after has nothing to do with an
old piece of parchment and everything to do with the more
precious treasure she's currently carrying in her belly. It
may not be the end of the world as we know it, but things
in Toronto are definitely heating up for summer.
What a long and rocky road to romance it's been for Elena
and Clay. Elena's put the past firmly behind her and
committed to Clay, for better or worse. And isn't that just
when everything is likely to go to hell? Action abounds as
old characters and new ones run with a plot full of twists,
turns and enough red herrings to keep the most persnickety
of readers entertained. A vastly entertaining read!
When half-demon Xavier calls in the favour Elena owes him,
it seems easy enough, steal Jack the Ripper's "From Hell"
letter away from a Toronto collector who had himself stolen
it from the Ripper evidence boxes in the Metropolitan
Police files. But nothing in the supernatural world is ever
as simple as it seems. Elena accidentally triggers a spell
placed on the letter, and manages to tear an opening that
leads into the nether regions of Victorian London. Toronto
may be looking for a tourism boost, but "Gateway to Hell"
isn't quite the new slogan the city had in mind...
