The Ghost Walker team are put in the Indonesian jungle on an extraction mission. A deadly virus has been unleashed by terrorists and rescue workers are endangered. During the extraction Dr. Draden Freeman finds himself shot by a dart and knows he is infected. Rather than endanger his teammates he slips back to the ground and forces them to leave him behind. He promises to try to stay in touch and begins to play a TOXIC GAME with the enemy.

Shylah Cosmos is sent to track the virus but stay hidden. When she sees Draden, she knows he is a Ghost Walker as she watches the lethal ease as he removes the terrorists one by one. When a lucky shot takes him down, she doesn't know he has the virus; she only knows she has to save him. Now with both of them exposed they can only continue the TOXIC GAME and hope that the other team members who didn't go very far from their teammate can find a cure.

TOXIC GAME is the best of the Ghost Walkers in a number of offerings. Draden and Shylah make an amazing team. With the virus they must face the fact that they have found their perfect match and don't have any idea how long they will live. You will feel a mixture of emotions as you read this, fear, hope, of course, love. There is also some humor interspersed in this especially when Shylah was teasing Draden about his good looks. I loved the byplay with her name, she hates the name Peony (the one crazy Dr. Whitney had given the orphaned child), but Draden had memories of that particular flower that made her like it after all.

In the last few of the Ghost Walkers books, I had a bit of trouble with the darker path Ms. Feehan had been taking her teams. They were borderline abusive toward their mates, and it was sometimes hard to read. I did not feel that with TOXIC GAME. They were quickly partners, in survival and in the getting rid of the terrorists. There is a sweetness that has been missing from this series, and it proves even macho, overprotective, arrogant jerks ... hmmm ... men can do loving and sweet things for their women.

SUMMARY

#1 New York Times bestselling author Christine Feehan takes readers into the hot zone in this pulse-pounding GhostWalker novel.

On a rescue mission in the heart of the Indonesian jungle, Dr. Draden Freeman and his GhostWalker team need to extract the wounded as quickly as possible—or risk spreading a deadly virus unleashed by a terrorist cell. When Draden gets infected, he forces his team to leave him behind. He won’t risk exposing anyone else. He intends to find the ones responsible and go out in a blaze of glory....

Shylah Cosmos’s mission is to track the virus and remain unseen. Her enhanced senses tell her that the gorgeous man eradicating the terrorists one by one is a GhostWalker—and his lethal precision takes her breath away. When he’s hit by a lucky shot, she can’t stop herself from stepping in, not knowing that by saving his life she’s exposed herself to the virus.

There’s no telling how much time Draden and Shylah have left. Racing to find a cure, they quickly realize that they’ve found their perfect partner just in time to lose everything. But even as the virus threatens to consume their bodies, they’ve never felt more alive.
