Women's Fiction | Multicultural African-American

Bea always felt that she really did have the best life. She is married to Lonnie, and they have two great kids. Little by little her life seems to be falling apart. Bea finds out that Lonnie has cheated on her, not just once that several times. One of these infidelities has produced a son. Others have just caused her secret to come alive again. Bea is also a surrogate for Lonnie's cousin. So, not only is she dealing with Lonnie, her secret, Bea is trying to protect the baby.

Bea's best friend is Awilda is also having problems in her marriage. Awilda is married to Dexter who has just learned that he has MS. Awilda just can't handle the problems in her life. These girls had become friends when they were young, and have remained best friends in their adult lives.

As things continue, Bea realizes that she must do something with her life. Bea knows that she can't continue keeping her secrets as they seem to be destroying everything, including the baby that she is carrying. One night during a dinner party, Bea loses it. Bea goes to the garage and gets the gun that is hiding there. The reason, she just wanted to scare Lonnie and Awilda. Bea has figured out the worst secret ever. Lonnie and Awilda have been having an affair.

Sadeqa Johnson writes this story like you wouldn't believe. I enjoyed how she detailed the relationship between two best friends. If you have a friend that has been with you through thick and thin, you will love this. Sedeqa also writes about the problem that some people have to go through in their lives

While reading AND THEN THERE WAS ME, my heart went out to Bea, a woman who thought she had it all but realizes her life is not what others picture it to be. Sadeqa is a great storyteller. If you really want to get a great book to read, pick this one up and enjoy.

SUMMARY

"A captivating tale to savor about a woman whose buried past threatens her picture perfect family life. Felicia is a wonderfully flawed, compelling main character, one who has stayed with me long after I finished the book. A winning novel from a writer to watch." -Benilde Little, bestselling author

Felicia Lyons, a stressed out stay-at-home mom, struggles to sprint ahead of the demands of motherhood while her husband spends long days at the office. Felicia taps, utters mantra, and breathes her way through most situations, but on some days, like when the children won’t stop screaming her name or arguing over toy trucks and pretzel sticks, she wonders what it would be like to get in her car and drive away.

Then one evening the telephone rings, and in a split second the harried mother’s innocent fantasy becomes a hellish reality. The call pulls her back into a life she’d rather forget. Felicia hasn’t been completely honest about her upbringing, and her deception forces her return to the Philadelphia of her childhood, where she must confront the family demons and long buried secrets she thought she had left behind.

From a phenomenal fresh voice in fiction, comes the compelling story of what happens when the dream falls apart. Sadeqa Johnson's Second House from the Corner is an unforgettable tale of love, loss, rediscovery, and the growing pains of marriage.
