Zebulan ben Judah, a lucipire -- a demon vampire - and also a
double agent for the vangels -- vampire angels -- , has been
imprisoned and tortured for a year by Jasper, king of the
lucipires and Satan's right hand man, er, demon. Zeb is
detained in Horror Castle, near Norway. Regina Dorasdottir, a
witch, became a vangel in 1250. She's been alone a long time,
she has a short fuse and a sharp tongue, and she's a staunch
feminist. Regina is in Transylvania, Pennsylvania -- where
several vangels live, including Regina. Vikar Sigurdsson is
still giving his castle the finishing touches, and Regina is
bored; she wants to do something meaningful like the men do.
Suddenly she has a brilliant idea: she will get Zeb out; the
men have not been able to do it. Truth be told, they are
forbidden to go near Horror Castle, but there is a
technicality that nobody but Regina noticed. However Regina's
pride and stubbornness put the whole world on the brink of
Armageddon!
Fans of the Deadly Angels series have been waiting a
long time for Zeb's story and it was well worth the wait! Zeb
is a fascinating character, his backstory is tragic, and it
was wonderful how Ms. Hill wove Zeb's story through
historical facts, as Zeb is Hebrew and the only non-Viking
hero. The seven Sigurdsson brothers and their better halves
are all present for the final showdown, as the vangels
prepare for an all-out war. In spite of the violence and
gore, there are some splendid passages in GOOD VAMPIRES GO TO
HEAVEN, particularly that of the catacombs under the Vatican.
The characters are, as usual, vastly entertaining, notably
the "Three Stooges from Hell", witches who stick with Regina
for a while, amongst them, literally a cackling old crone,
and wacky Tante Lulu also makes an appearance.
The banter and the inner monologues are as hilarious as ever,
and Horror Castle more than lives up to its moniker: it's
downright creepy and rather revolting. Zeb and Regina's
romance is not as prominent as the love story usually is in
this series, but their destinies are linked to the outcome of
the war, Zeb is also a more reserved character than the
Vikings. Sandra Hill ties up all the loose ends in
spectacular fashion, and GOOD VAMPIRES GO TO HEAVEN's ending
is very satisfying, if not precisely what I thought it would
be; I always love good surprises and Sandra Hill always
delivers!
New York Times bestselling author SANDRA HILL
