"Can the team find the religious relics or will the demon Belial destroy them all?"

Fresh Fiction Review

Sacrifices

Fantasy

If you haven't read the prior books in the Arcane Underworld series, stop what you are doing right now and pick up the first book, PREMONITIONS. SACRIFICES concludes Jamie Schultz's Arcane Underworld and I highly suggest reading the series in order. SACRIFICES picks up right where the prior book ends, as the reader is thrown headlong into Jamie Schultz's dark and eerie world.

Karyn Ames and Anna Ruiz specialize in stealing occult relics and their team has always been successful at avoiding the really big troubles -- until now. Their involvement with Enoch Sobell, a notorious crime lord who delves heavily in the supernatural, has left Karyn and Anna infected with demons. Karyn's demon appears somewhat helpful, as it focuses Karyn's precognitive hallucinations and prevents her from being overwhelmed by them. However, Anna's demon is not so kind and they fear it's just a matter of time before Anna gives into the darker urges of her demon. Can the team, as splintered as it is, find the religious relics needed to save Anna and stop the demon Belial from its diabolical plans?

SACRIFICES is dark, disturbing, and sometimes downright gruesome. In fact, SACRIFICES could almost be classified as horror rather than urban fantasy as some of the scenes had me cringing at the sheer nastiness described by Jamie Schultz. If demons are even remotely like those described in SACRIFICES, I'll gladly keep my distance!

However, don't be turned off by the horror aspect as Jamie Schultz writes one darned-good storyline filled with characters who are likable despite their flaws. Nail continues to be my favorite character, although I have to admit that Genevieve grew on me. I wanted to dislike her but her obvious concern for Anna and her well being, even at the potential expense of her own life, made me a fan.

SACRIFICES may be the end of the Arcane Underground series, but Jamie Schultz has picked up a fan with this reader. I can't wait to see what else he has in store for us!

SUMMARY

Things get a little demonic in the latest Arcane Underwold novel from the author of Splintered.

Thanks to their recent involvement with a magus crimelord and his demonic partner in mayhem, occult thieves Anna Ruiz and Karyn Ames are both stuck sharing head space with a demon. But while Karyn’s possession has had the unexpected benefit of focusing her visions of the future, Anna’s demon is spurring on her darkest urges, and it’s only a matter of time before she acts on them—and hurts someone in the process.

To save their skins, the two need to find a mysterious relic. But with their search taking them into some of the darkest places in the arcane underworld, Anna and Karyn will have to ally themselves with a group no self-respecting thief would be caught dead with—the Federal Bureau of Investigation...
