THE TWO OF US by Andy Jones, has some eye catching cover art, a great
big balloon
with a bird trying to avoid
its string; I guess that's how I see the bird. Tag line of
the story is 'Falling in love is the easy part. What matters
most is what happens next'. THE TWO OF US is the story of William
Fisher and Ivy. It is a whirlwind start to a relationship,
almost a year of which we will see captured in the story. A
few facts of their relationship reminded me of the Katherine
Heigl starred rom-com Knocked Up.
So you see, Ivy is knocked up, but the story is not that of
Ivy telling us about it. It is from Fisher's point of view—
how he falls in love and things move forward faster than
usual. We see how he copes with love, Ivy's unexpected
pregnancy, and a chain of events following it. Not the usual
getting pregnant, forcibly staying together and growing
apart kind, but we see how Fisher copes with love, more
importantly staying in love despite the circumstances.
Then comes the little fights, loss, babies, and finally
getting back on track with everything calm around them.
I do
not usually read too many stories with just one point of view,
so I found the tone of THE TWO OF US a bit overwhelming. At
times I missed and wanted to know what the other characters
were doing or thinking. Since it was Fisher as the narrator,
sometimes it felt like a pity party. The saving
grace though was the unmistakable presence of Ivy throughout
the story; Fisher did pay her a lot of attention even when
she wasn't physically present with him. So yes, Fisher was
trying his best to keep their love strong and
not letting it get caught between the technicalities of
everyday life.
There was quite a bit chatter on social media about this
book and that's the reason I picked it up. I however would
have liked to see and read more from the other characters
too. It felt very one dimensional, maybe it was intended to
be so. Overall the story did portray what goes on in the
mind of men in relationships moving faster than they would
like to. Sometimes we do not pay attention to or think of
how things seem to one person, and THE TWO OF US showed an
interesting perspective.
A charming, unconventional love story about a couple who
embark on a wildly passionate, two-week fling that will
change both of their lives forever. If you loved One Day
and
The Rosie Project, you will fall head-over-heels for The
Two
of Us.
Anyone can fall in love. But not everyone can stay there.
Fisher and Ivy have been an item for all of nineteen days.
Both of them have been in relationships before, and this
time around, they know something is different—they are
meant
to be together. The fact that they know little else about
each other is a minor detail.
But over the next year, a time in which their lives are
irrevocably altered, Fisher and Ivy discover that falling
in
love is one thing—and staying there is an entirely
different
story.
The Two of Us is a charming, honest, laugh-out-loud novel
about life, love, and the importance of taking neither one
for granted.
