Like a man in the desert, is it the real thing or a
mirage? After a real string of bad luck, including
hearing about the death of his parents and an "opportunity for change" being a
demotion, Dominic wants an out from his life as a prosecutor.
Not that Dominic's life is all that bad. Born in
England, he had relocated to the United States as a young
man with a glad good bye from his parents and ends up as
a prosecutor and part-time musician in Austin, Texas.
Things had been pretty good for a while, but suddenly
life is the pits. How much more dismal can it get?
Then, like a ray of Texas sun, in comes the lady in lime
to the bar where he normally plays his part-time gig. As
she joins the conversation, Dominic starts connecting
the dots while his good buddy, Gus Cronstedt, spills the
beans on a rich client who goes around collecting lots of
rent in cash. Is this the opportunity of a lifetime, or
what?
Despite his legal training, Dominic has no moral
conflicts about doing the perfect crime.
In fact, Dominic doesn't even feel any emotions, mixed or
otherwise. His goal is to be the top dog, pure and
simple, and sorry if anyone gets hurt in the process. Yes,
Dominic knows all about emotions - he has been playing
people for years. It just happens that he is a sociopath
and here is an opportunity to be rich. What could
possibly go wrong?
Already considered one of the best new voices in
crime novels and well-known for his Hugo Marston novels,
Mark Pryor's HOLLOW MAN will certainly
add to his growing fame! With its psychological insights
and brilliant plotting, HOLLOW MAN is a truly absorbing
read that will linger in your mind long after your reach
its surprising and chilling ending.
Drawing on his own background experiences as an
Englishman in Austin, Texas and his work as an Assistant
District Attorney "fighting the bad guys," Pryor paints a
very authentic backdrop to his intriguing protagonist,
Dominic, and his quest to change his fortunes. As a
sociopath, Dominic can zip up and down through a range
of emotions that lets him connive and collude his way to
maximize his access to his long-term goals. Like
watching a cobra weaving its way out of a basket, you want to keep your eyes
reading to see what Dominic does next. Yet the idea of dealing with a
person like him will haunt your thoughts for days.
While Pryor claims that HOLLOW MAN is a stand-alone
novel, I am not so sure we have seen the last of him!
HOLLOW MAN is definitely one of the most captivating
psychological novels that I have read in a long while.
HOLLOW MAN is totally addictive and you will be shocked
yet in awe of how well Dominic plays his game!
HOLLOW MAN definitely needs to be on your "must read"
list. Don't miss out on this one!
Dominic is a prosecutor, a musician, and an Englishman living in Texas. He's also a psychopath. His main goal is to hide his condition and lead a seemingly normal life in hopes to pay off his debts and become a full-time musician in Austin's club scene. But on one lousy day his carefully-controlled world starts to shatter: he's demoted at work and accused of stealing a fellow musician's song. He also meets a beautiful woman in a lime green dress—perhaps the biggest threat to his safety of all. At her urging, Dominic hatches a plan to steal a van he knows will be filled with cash. He picks two friends as accomplices, insisting on no guns and no violence. But a security guard catches them in the act and simple theft turns into capital murder. Cracks start to show in the conspiracy and, with no allegiance to anyone but himself, Dominic has to decide whether to stick by his partners in crime, or let his true nature come out to play.
