SAVANNAH PAST MIDNIGHT is book two in the Past Midnight
series by Christine Edwards. Even though this is part of
a series, I believe that SAVANNAH PAST MIDNIGHT can work
as a standalone. There is a little bit of
submission and domination that is part of Cosette and
Colton's erotic play, but nothing super extreme. Fans who
love their paranormal romances to have a raw, earthy
sexuality will enjoy SAVANNAH PAST MIDNIGHT.
Cosette and Colton's first meeting establishes who they
are and sets the tone of their relationship. What I like
most about their relationship is that they treat each
other as equals and are definitely on the same
wavelength. Colton is a brash cowboy with a lot of sexy
swagger who never censors himself, but Cosette is a
strong woman and fierce vampire who can give as good as
she gets. Christine Edwards does a great job of making
the reader feel the intensity and passion in SAVANNAH
PAST MIDNIGHT. The chemistry between Cosette and Colton
is palpable. I like that when they first meet, Cosette is
a vampire while Colton is human. For me, that throws the
balance of power in her direction, even though it never
seems to bother Colton one way or the other.
Rival vampires add excitement and danger to SAVANNAH PAST MIDNIGHT, and
this keeps the story
speeding along. The danger forces the couple to rely on
each other and accelerates the romance. I was happy to
see how Christine Edwards decided to bring back
characters from the previous book. Their appearances make
sense without cluttering up the story. I liked the high
energy and erotic elements in SAVANNAH PAST MIDNIGHT. It
seems like the series will just keep getting better. This
book has really made me curious about the next.
SAVANNAH PAST MIDNIGHT is a very sexy and sultry vampire
free-for-all. I enjoyed this book even more than the
last. I'm intrigued by the vampire Katerina and hope the
next book is hers.
SUMMARY
Cosette Beauvais is a risk taker with a capital R. When her
daredevil behavior leaves her paralyzed, her uncle ends her
suffering by turning her into a vampire. In no time she
makes her mark as one of the most cunning female vamps in
existence. Though her fearlessness is admired in her
violent
new world, her impulsiveness leaves her with terrible
regrets. By violating the rules, she kills a young human while
feeding from him. The selfish deed haunts her, causing her
to steer clear of men who attract her both physically and
mentally. After she breaks with a vampire kingpin named
Tristan who tried to turn her against her uncle and her own
vampire family, her life spins out of control. Bloodthirsty wolves, a new threat to the Savannah area,
stalk her daily. She is dead set on finding the source of
the attempts on her life and repairing the strained ties
with her uncle Severin, so the last thing Cosette needs is
a
devastatingly sexy new human in her life. Colton Brennan is
a massive Montana cowboy, a skilled fighter who has sworn
to
win Cosette’s love. Try as she might, she can’t resist the passion he has
ignited within her, no matter what the consequences. Can
this human provide the love and protection Cosette has
unwittingly craved? Meanwhile Tristan and his power-hungry
clan are on a quest for Southern vampiric domination. Can Cosette and her Charleston-based vampire family survive
their brutal onslaughts? Book 2 in the Past Midnight series.
ExcerptClosing in from behind, one of Tristan’s guards threatens,
“Release her now. She’s coming with us.”He twists us around to face them and I watch Colton smile a
malicious grin, one of a fearless killer, before he lands
the two giant vampires with, “You just try and
take her from me.” I’m stunned to see a glimmer of
excitement in his eyes, as if he would almost
welcome the violent altercation. I speak low and quickly, “Don’t do this. You don’t know
what they’re capable of.” I know I can get out of here, but now I need to try and
get him out of here as well. Damn it! His eyes never leave theirs as he says, “Think that’s the
other way around, wildcat. Time we bail. This place has
always been a den of fuckin’ wannabe assholes, anyhow.” As fast as a whip he lashes out with a powerful haymaker
that catches the first of Tristan’s men square in the jaw.
It hardly fazes the vampire—only causes him to stagger back
two steps. Both of them lurch for us as we spin around, the
bouncer blocking our way. No time! Need to move fast! “I’ll handle this.” The words fall from my lips as I kick
the bouncer backward through the set of swinging glass
doors. Any humans who see the act will most likely be too
drunk or high at this late hour to process it. Even if they
do, it would have appeared to be a fast, bad-ass martial
arts kick that caught him right in the chest, nothing more.
There is no way for them to measure the inhuman power
behind it. We leap over his splayed out body as Colton shouts, “My
ride is right behind yours! Go!” I jump onto my bike and take off as Tristan’s furious
guards race out onto the sidewalk, fighting their way
through the crowd of bystanders. I can hear Colton’s engine
behind mine, knowing that he’s made it. Not until we’re
three traffic lights away do I pull over to the curb. He
rolls up beside me on his low-slung chopper that perfectly
suits his huge frame. I lift my visor to meet a glacial stare as he asks angrily,
“You wanna give me some idea what all that
bullshit was about back there?” “No. I don’t. It was my personal business.” The muscles in his neck and shoulders go rigid as he grates
out, “Your business, huh? Woman, I about capped three guys
in a packed nightclub just to get us outta there safely, so
I think the very least you can do is give me a
fuckin’ explanation. The cloak and dagger act is wearin’
thin, sweetheart.” He’s leaning forward, nostrils flared. Most women would be
terrified, but I’m unbelievably aroused.
