After several years, Charlotte Justice is still carrying
around the emotional baggage of losing her husband and
young daughter in a violent shooting several years ago.
Recently, she's witnessed several traumatic incidents in
her job at the LAPD. To top it all off, there's a new lead
in a troubling cold case that she's itching to pursue. All
of this lands her an appointment with an on-the-job shrink,
charged with helping her explore her demons and get back to
work.
Charlotte's personal life is just as troubled as her
professional life. She has a new boyfriend and an
overbearing family. Before long, Charlotte's life becomes
even more tangled as her family, the cold case and the
death of her husband and daughter become interwoven. Who
can Charlotte trust? Who is lying? And what is the motive?
This book does a good job of weaving different ethnic
cultures together. Interestingly enough, it touches on
racism, prejudice and cultural differences from a black
woman's perspective.
The storytelling in this novel simmered, but never really
boiled. There are many, many characters involved, making
the story a bit confusing at times and difficult to follow.
The storyline was interesting enough, however I felt like I
was reading a police report much of the time. The
complexities of the LAPD and detailed investigative work
might be exciting to readers with a deeper knowledge of
those fields.
