Romance Contemporary

Moonlight On Butternut Lake is book three in the Butternut Lake series.

Mila Jones is on the run. She is trying to escape her abusive husband. He has told her that if she ever tries to leave him he will hunt her down. She knows the only way she is going to get away from him is to go far away from their home in Minneapolis. She is studying to be a nurse and gets the help of her guardian angel who works at an employment agency. Mila tells her the truth and accepts a position two hundred and fifty miles away in Butternut Lake. She tells Mila that the patient is difficult and he has already sent the last two nurses packing and running from his home. How bad can he be Mila wonders. Mila knows this is her only chance to get away from her abusive marriage.

Reid has had a very bad car accident that left him sitting in a ditch for days before he was found. He is confined to a wheelchair while recovering and he is bitter. He doesn't feel lucky that he is alive at all. He was very active and a workaholic before the accident. He feels as if his life is over and does not accept anyone helping him. He also suffers from nightmares because of the accident and screams out for help almost nightly. MOONLIGHT ON BUTTERNUT LAKE introduces Mila to Reid.

At first, I hated Reid. He was such a jerk to Mila and I hated how he treated her. She was only trying to help him and he kept thrashing out at her and pushing her and her help away. At times, I just wanted to smack him upside his head and other times, I was cheering for him. Reading MOONLIGHT ON BUTTERNUT LAKE was like being on an emotional roller coaster. Will Mila be able to trust Reid and tell him what she is hiding from? Will they be able to help each other heal and learn to live again? Or will Reid push her away and send her packing?

I love visiting Butternut Lake. It's like being with family in our lake cabin for summer vacation. I love the lake community and how they watch out for each other. MOONLIGHT ON BUTTERNUT LAKE deals with some very hard and life altering challenges. I found myself so wrapped up in Mila and Reid's lives and really wanted to see them get over their pasts and learn to be happy again. Mary McNear has been on my author radar since the very first book in this series. She knows how to engage the reader right from the very first page and gets you right into the characters lives. She makes them seem like they are your old friends and you can't help but cheer for them as they go through life's difficulties.

SUMMARY

From the author of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling Up at Butternut Lake comes the third novel in the Butternut Lake series—a dazzling story of two wounded souls seizing a second chance at life and love. On the run from her abusive husband, Mila Jones flees Minneapolis for the safety and serenity of Butternut Lake. Ready to forge a new life, Mila's position as home health aide to Reid Ford is more than a job. It’s a chance at a fresh start. Though her sullen patient seems determined to make her quit, she refuses to give up on him. Haunted by the car accident that nearly killed him, Reid retreats to his brother’s cabin on Butternut Lake and lashes out at anyone who tries to help. Reid wishes Mila would just go away. . .until he notices the strength, and the secrets, behind her sad, brown eyes. Against all odds, Mila slowly draws Reid out. Soon they form a tentative, yet increasingly deeper, bond as Mila lowers her guard and begins to trust again, and Reid learns how to let this woman who has managed to crack through his protective shell into his life. While the seemingly endless days of summer unfold, Reid and Mila take the first steps to healing as they discover love can be more than just a dream.
