In the third novel of the Prospero's Wars series,
Jaye Wells continues on with
Kate's adventures. This time when a coven leader is found
murdered, Kate
and The Magical Enforcement Agency must team up with the
local police to
track down the killer before a war erupts on the streets.
With plenty of obstacles standing in her way, including a
pesky reporter, Kate
has a lot to handle in this installment. Though this is an
Urban Fantasy book
that has a good amount of action and suspense, the author
takes quite a
long time setting up the story in the beginning. Nearly
three chapters in and
we're just getting into the bulk of the story where the
stakes are stated and
we get to the point where a story can begin.
Similarly, Jaye Wells played up the dynamic between Kate
and her partner,
Morales in the first book of the series. However, while
they do get along,
something felt missing between their usual banter. It
seemed to take a
backseat in regards to the plot thus weakening what I
enjoyed about the
earlier books in this series.
This spellbinding world that Wells has created reminds me
much of Stacia
Kane's Downside Ghosts series. It's a little gritty and
dark, filled with magical
twists and turns. If you're a fan of Well's work, this
series might be a good
match for you.
MAGIC IS A DRUG. ADDICTIVE AND DEADLY. After the grisly murder of a dirty magic coven leader, Kate Prospero and The Magical Enforcement Agency team up with the local police to find the killer. When a tenacious reporter sticks her nose in both the investigation and Prospero's past in the covens, old ghosts resurface. As the infighting between covens turns ugly, an all-out war brews in the slums of Babylon.
