Fantasy | Science Fiction

Three worlds. Three journeys. Separate yet bound together by fate and dreams and the dreamers who quest for an uncertain future. Linked by the Deep Magic they have yet to understand and control. And for any of them to survive every quest must succeed.

Twenty-six years have passed since Galen Arvad, the mystic warrior, discovered the power of Deep Magic. Censured by all, the mystics have been hunted and slaughtered for decades and blame for the Dragon Wars is placed squarely on their shoulders. Now their enemies offer to lead them to the lost city of Calsandria, the seat and source of their power. Galen's sons are both to be part of the quest. Adversaries, one a clan warrior and the other a Pir priest, they take a small band south.

In the world of the Fae, Dwynwyn, Queen of the Dead once raised an army of the dead to save her homeland. Now her kingdom, as well as the original five Fae kingdoms, is at risk. An expedition is to set out, one representative from each kingdom to join together in a search for the ancestral home of the Kyree.

The Goblin Realm Grand Wizard, Thux, has a journey of his own to complete. The Goblin King, Mimic, desperate to learn the secrets of the Titans, has sent him to the Ogre Courts of Og. Thux's wife is held hostage to insure both his success and return.

MYSTIC QUEST is the second book of The Bronze Canticles, following MYSTIC WARRIOR, which came out last year. The Hickmans have a lot of practice at world-building and are adept at it. The three worlds are very different and the story threads go back and forth between the dimensions, each alive with magic, adventure and human drama...even in the non-human worlds. An intriguing story -- I can't wait to read the last book in the trilogy.

SUMMARY

Twenty-three years have passed since Galen Arvad first exposed the deep magic--a power that spans three separate worlds. Now, that magic brings tragedy and darkness to the lives of all who wield it. Galen and his clans suffer an endless war in the realm of the dragonkings; a gruesome kingdom of the undead rises in the faery domain, and in the realm of the reanimated rusting titans, a tyrant goblin’s lust for conquest goes unchecked. A new generation of heroes sets out on separate, life-changing journeys, and each will find their redemption may be beyond the power of magic.
