On a hot August day in the tiny Scottish village of
Moraig, William MacKenzie along with his brother James,
is awaiting the arrival of a London Times reporter.
Moraig is in dire straits and William intends to get the
economy rolling again by attracting Londoners to their
clean and quaint village; he is also reviving the
Highland Games. In order to garner some much needed
press, inviting a journalist from the City looked like a
good idea. But the coach is late, William is sweating in
his heavy kilt, and when the reporter finally arrives,
William is stunned speechless: their visitor is Penelope
Tolbertson, not the chap he expected, and William is
immediately and irrevocably infatuated with the blonde
beauty.
HER HIGHLAND FLING, a novella in the Second Sons
series, is short and most definitely sweet. While several
characters from the previous books in the series make
cameo appearances, HER HIGHLAND FLING works perfectly as
a standalone. Penelope is a very independent woman; a
spinster who unfortunately stutters, she has however made
a good life for herself using her brains. William is so
blinded by her beauty that he becomes entirely tongue-
tied, and when he speaks he puts his foot in his mouth.
Penelope's first impression is that he is definitely not
too bright, and the initial exchanges between the two are
truly hilarious. Penelope appears cool, calm and
collected but the Scotsman's mere physical presence
troubles her no end.
William is a refreshing sort of hero: he's a good and
honest man, there is no trace of a rogue whatsoever.
Penelope is bold, daring, and she knows what she wants.
They make a lovely and entertaining couple, and their
road to romance is unusual, fun, and ever so lovely. I
love how Ms. McQuiston captures the stunning beauty of
Scotland on the page, as well as the flavour of life in
the village. The story moves along quickly and
seamlessly, the prose is light and airy, befitting the
mood and the characters. The dialogues are witty, and the
banter between brothers James and William sounds so true-
to-life, it's uncanny. HER HIGHLAND FLING is a lovely and
charming read, guaranteed to make you smile!
William MacKenzie has always been protective of his
Scottish
village. When Moraig's economy falters, he has the perfect
solution to lure wealthy Londoners to this tiny hamlet:
resurrect the ancient Highland Games! But for this to
work,
William knows he needs a reporter to showcase the town in
just the right light.
A female journalist might be a tolerated oddity in
Brighton,
but newly minted reporter Penelope Tolbertson is
discovering
that finding respect in London is a far more difficult
prospect. After receiving an invitation to cover Moraig's
Highland Games, Penelope is determined to prove to her
London editors just how valuable she can be.
Penelope instantly captures William's heart, but she is
none
too impressed with the gruff, broody Highlander; however,
as
she begins to understand his plans, Penelope discovers she
may want more from him than just a story. She's only got a
few days … but maybe a few days are all they need.
