Ellis Harkington arrives in Gamin, Maine, with no memory
of
her life prior to arriving on the train. The people around
her claim to be her friends, saying she just needs to rest
and that all her memories will return to her eventually.
However, Ellis senses something is amiss. Will Ellis
remember what she has forgotten in time to save herself?
We are gradually introduced to a society calling
themselves
the Nightbirds, where every potential ally for Ellis
appears
to have some sort of underlying motivation for befriending
her. Tracy and Laura Hickman's beautiful writing style
takes
readers into the heart of a mystery as we wonder what
exactly Ellis has forgotten and why everyone around her is
so odd. The ties to the ship and the paisley phantom are
intriguing but it takes the plot far too long to develop
to
adequately hold my attention; it was far too easy for me
to
put UNWEPT down and do something else.
UNWEPT is the first book in The Nightbirds series
and
has a lot of potential. Unfortunately, it's just not my
cup
of tea at all as the story seems to meander along, never
really picking up steam until we get to a very stunning
conclusion- one that almost makes me want to read the
second
book. Perhaps other readers will appreciate UNWEPT more
as
Tracy and Laura Hickman's writing style is quite lyrical
and
they have a gift for building a mysterious and quite
foreboding ambiance.
Unwept -- the beginning of a spellbinding new trilogy by
Tracy Hickman and Laura Hickman bestselling co-creators of
Dragonlance and Ravenloft
Gamin, Maine, is a remote seaside town where everyone
seems to know Ellis Harkington better than she knows
herself—but she doesn’t remember any of them.
Unknown events have robbed Ellis of her memory. Concerned
individuals, who claim to be friends and loved ones,
insist that she simply needs to recuperate, and that her
memories may return in time. But, for her own sake—so they
claim—they refuse to divulge what has brought her to this
state.
Ellis finds herself adrift in a town of ominous mysteries,
cryptic hints, and disturbingly familiar strangers. The
Nightbirds, a clique of fashionable young men and women,
claim her as one of their own, but who can she truly
trust? And what of the phantom suitor who visits her in
her dreams? Is he a memory, a figment of her imagination,
or a living nightmare beyond rational explanation? Only
her lost past holds the answers she seeks—if she can
uncover its secrets before she falls prey to an unearthly
killer.
