Jane Spyrus is a weapons and spy technology designer for
B.L.I.S.S., a spy agency. She is very dedicated to her
work and hasn't been dating much. She lives with her
grandmother, Maggie, who was a B.L.I.S.S. agent before
she was hurt in an accident and is now confined to a
wheelchair. When Jane cannot see to her, their neighbour
Edie Andretti takes care of Maggie. After a rather
disconcerting day at work, as Jane comes home, Edie says
she's going on a hot date, which is surprising since Edie
hadn't mentioned seeing anyone. The following day, Edie's
He expected his sister to meet him at the airport but she
never showed up; this is not like her. Then Jane
remembers Edie saying that she had noticed unusual goings
on at work. Jane doesn't waste a minute; she, Abel,
Maggie and her dog, along with Edie's cat get in the van
to find Abel's sister, who is wearing an unusual tracking
device of Jane's invention.
What a wild ride it is! In THE LOVING DAYLIGHTS, the very
talented Lynsay Sands tackles the spying world and it's a
winner! Ms. Sands is a master at world building and
creating unforgettable characters and THE LOVING
DAYLIGHTS has all that, not to mention her trademark
humour. Jane's weapons are a source of merriment all
through the book, such as her new mini missile launchers,
which come in the form of neon pink vibrators; and yet
the silly weapons blend right into the story and are
significant to the goings-on; only Ms. Sands could get
away with some of those outrageous things.
The characters are engaging, totally believable even when
facing the most outlandish situations, and the funniest
I've seen in quite a while, and there is a great
chemistry between Abel and Jane; they're a lovely couple.
Ms. Sands spins a fast-paced, solid suspense while adding
several laugh-out-loud moments, a few of them involving
the dog from hell.
Ms. Sand's writing is elegant, she excels at dialogues,
but where she really shines is being able to successfully
combine a really good suspense, all that zaniness which
at times borders on bad taste, but never quite crosses
the line. I hadn't had that much fun in quite a while.
THE LOVING DAYLIGHTS would appear to be the first in a
series, and I hope it's the case because I would
definitely want to read more about those characters!
Shy Jane Spyrus loves gadgets. She can build anything
B.L.I.S.S. needs in the international organization's fight
against crime—although its agents aren't exactly lining up
at her door. Some of them think her inventions are a
little
too . . . well, innovative. Like her shrink-wrap
prophylactic constraints or her spray-on truth serum.
Of course, you can't use wacky inventions to fix all your
problems; Jane knows that better than anyone. Her neighbor
has been kidnapped, driving that point home. She will have
to team up with another human being—and Abel Andretti
arrives just in time. He will help Jane find her neighbor,
stop a villain, and, most of all, he will show Jane how to
love the daylights out of something without batteries.
