GRAY BISHOP is book two in the Cornerstone Run series.
It
relies heavily on knowledge from book one, Black Rook, and
the tension builds relentlessly as we follow the McQueen
brothers while they make a stand against psychotic half
loup, half vampire sisters created by the mystical Magi to
wipe out the loup garou.
Bishop, Knight, and Rook McQueen are the sons of alpha of
the Cornerstone run. Bishop is a gray wolf, who does not
rank as high as black wolves within the loup garou
hierarchy, but he is his father's choice to take over as
the next Alpha of their run. Bishop bears heavy burdens as
other survivors from several other decimated runs arrive as
refugees to Cornerstone, and Cornerstone is harassed by the
guerrilla tactics of the psycho sisters and their minions. I
love Bishop, and my heart broke for this stand-up guy as I
watched him struggle to do the right thing for his people
and his brothers.
Jillian is the only child of her run's Alpha in Springwell,
a widow who lost her husband and unborn child to a drunk
driver two years ago. She is on loan to Cornerstone to
help in the fight against the threat against the half-
vampires. Bishop and Jillian are drawn to each other, but
as the heirs to their respective separate runs, they have no
freedom to pursue a relationship. Their wolves instantly
recognize the other as a mate, though their human sides
acknowledge the futility of pursuing a romance between
them. I felt great empathy for Jillian, both for her
tragic past and for her difficult present, where her heart
and her head clash.
There is a lot of unhappiness and angst in GRAY BISHOP by Kelly
Meade,
despite the slowly blooming romance between Bishop and
Jillian. The loup garou are at war, and even though there
are bright spots of multiple developing love relationships
and brotherly loyalty, the torment of war is the
overarching feeling in this book. Despite the
constant battles and intrigue, GRAY BISHOP is very much a
character-driven book, with the anguished brothers and
their loves deftly drawn and their torments crisply
executed. There is a huge cliff hanger at the finish,
leaving me anxious for the release of book three, White
Knight. I will definitely continue with this fine fantasy
trilogy.
Some people need something to fight for… With the attacks on their homes escalating and human half-breeds seeking sanctuary among them, the loup garou are reaching their breaking point. Two, in particular. After failing to stop his little brother’s kidnapping years ago, Bishop McQueen angrily broods on his shame, though no one else blames him. Jillian Reynolds is still dealing with a tragic accident that took everything she ever wanted from life. And her attraction to Bishop is only making things more difficult. When word reaches them that Jillian's hometown is under attack, the Alpha takes Bishop, Jillian, and a group of enforcers to assist in the battle. And it is in this chaos that both Bishop and Jillian will have to face their pasts—and the true feelings they have for each other—if they are going to survive…
