Moxie Summers has all the confidence and attitude you
need. She's a sexy plus size woman who is not afraid to
say exactly what she wants. So why does she have such
terrible luck with men? Moxie finds her "Adonis", Miles
Dane, during a night of heavy drinking, but it only ends
in disaster.
Not only is she completely humiliated, but
it turns out her dream guy is the father of her newest
student. She must navigate his unusual behavior, a skunk,
his son's unusual intellect, bad sushi, her interfering
stepmother, jealousy, a slew of bad dates, weight-loss
programs, and the actions of a truly diabolical Girl
Scout. Will she be able to get together with Miles or is
she doomed to a lifetime of sassy kindergarteners and
tasteless losers? THE CHRONICLES OF MOXIE by Z.B. Heller is a comedic
romance
that will keep you laughing from the moment you meet the
sassy heroine to the moment you close the book. Heller
has a real gift for zingers and one-liners which makes
the dialogue a real treasure through the whole story. The
comedy stretches from all areas, from the antics of
drinkers to the natural madness of school children to the
innuendo-laden conversations of young best friends.
The
sex scenes fluctuate between believable and unbelievable,
but they are always memorable. The romance is very sweet
and slow-burning, though the apparent bipolar nature of
Miles turns both Moxie and the reader cold.
The character
of Dillon, son of Miles, is one of the best-developed
characters in the whole book, though he is just in
kindergarten and not as heavily featured through the
book.
Though the dialogue and physical descriptions of the
characters are all aces, the characterization seems a
little dependent on stereotypes. The characters of the
sassy gay friend and the Jewish interfering stepmother
are particularly so, which can add some dissonance to the
reader's experience of them.
Moxie herself is a little
flat sometimes. In the beginning through around the first
half of the book, Moxie has no doubts about herself. She
knows she's big and she absolutely owns it; her
stepmother telling her to lose weight only inspires
biting sarcasm and she will not let her disastrous date
tell her anything about his company's weight-loss program
without a swift kick where the sun doesn't shine. She
does a massive switch in the final fourth of the book
when her rival mocks her for her weight.
The rival is a
character who is minimally involved compared to the
stepmother and disaster date, but her snappiness inspires
complete and total emotional collapse for our otherwise
very strong-minded heroine. This and a few other small
moments of contradiction make the characters somewhat
less than believable.
The characterization faults aside, THE CHRONICLE OF MOXIE
is amazingly
funny. The kindergarten class which is fortunate enough
to have Moxie as their teacher becomes a character on its
own. The diabolical Girl Scout obsessed with cuteness and
the children's inability to process their own innuendo-
laden statements provide a nice contrast to the biting
wit of Moxie's friends and boyfriends. The email
conversations between Moxie and her stepmother will leave
anyone who has similar memories of their family in
stitches.
For a humorous and heartwarming story, you cannot do
better than THE CHRONICLES OF MOXIE. This is a very cute,
very endearing tale of real-life people with real-life
problems in dating and family relationships. If you like
sweet romances with plus-sized heroines and dashing men
who know how to take care of a woman, THE CHRONICLES OF
MOXIE is the book for you.
