Cherise is a WOLF ON THE RUN, fleeing from death at the
hands of the pack that rejected her. Cherise's father was
killed when she was young, and her mother fled with
Cherise
to prevent the werewolf pack killing Cherise because she
was left unable to shift into a wolf after a severe
childhood illness. Cherise and her mother lived off the
grid, moving around and taking menial jobs in an attempt
to
stay one step in front of the pack that is hunting them.
But then Cherise's mother is killed, and Cherise flees to
Salvation, NC- led there by a dream that takes her to the
doorstep of a small pack that welcomes her with
startlingly
open arms.
Walters does make Cherise a very sympathetic
character. I kept waiting to see if her inability to
change to a wolf would be magically cured by her mate
bond-
I'll let you read WOLF ON THE RUN to see for yourself!
Cole is a good man and a dominant wolf with strong ties to
his small and progressive pack. He finds Cherise as three
hunters from her former pack are trying to rape then kill
her on Salvation Pack's land. Cole slays the three wolves
to protect Cherise then takes her home with him. Cole
knows that Cherise is his mate, but can he convince her to
stay and give them a chance? Even with Cherise's
uncertainty, Cole chooses to back his skittish woman
against all who might endanger her, which could cost him
everything. Even with the instant recognition of his
destined Mate, I had a hard time buying some of Cole's
actions.
Walters uses the common device of instant bonding between
shifter mates to explain the InstaLove that occurs. I am
not a fan of the instalove trope, but given that it's such
a short story (only 214 pages), the instant bond is almost
necessitated just to move the story along. Use of animal
shifters also means that Cole has unheard of recovery time
in the sack, and the author emphasized that point several
times. The story was fairly entertaining, but did not
stand out in any way from the many other shifter stories
on
the shelves. Those looking for a quick PNR read with
light
erotica will probably enjoy WOLF ON THE RUN.
