About twenty years ago, a rock star came out as a vampire,
and on national TV turned someone publicly. The undead
came
forth at last but for a little while, vampires were
persecuted and shunned, but since the majority of those
who
suffered the ire of the intolerant members of the
population
turned out to be humans, the hostile treatment of vampires
stopped rather quickly; they soon became fashionable.
Since
then, the vampires have completely integrated into
society.
Dr Kale Swanson has been a vampire for around a hundred
years. Although still a country boy at heart, he is a
psychiatrist to vampires and humans alike. One evening,
when
one of his regular vampire patients doesn't show up, a
human
client is waiting to see him, the beautiful Pamela. She is
quite flirtatious, but she really needs to talk to Dr
Swanson. Kale is rather smitten as well. After she leaves
Kale's office, two men barge in and are looking for her.
Pamela is quite mysterious and has many secrets, which
Kale
sets out to discover. She finally reveals that, when she
ended her relationship with her fiancé Patrick, things
didn't go well. He wouldn't take no for an answer and
swore
to get her back, whether she liked it or not. Patrick is a
very powerful and intimidating man.
WHISPERS IN A DEAD MAN'S EARS is a fun, sexy and
entertaining read. It's a rather conventional paranormal
romance, but it is extremely well written. And for once
the
author takes care of making a point of how other creatures
react to the undead. The characters are very engaging,
especially Kale; he is a very nice and caring man. Even
though WHISPERS IN A DEAD MAN'S EARS is a novella, the
story
is complete, nothing is left hanging, and the characters
are
surprisingly well fleshed out. There are a couple of
rather
stunning revelations at the end that I never saw coming.
Doctor Kale Swanson is the only vampire psychiatrist in a
small town. Usually he spends his nights listening to the
undeads' problems but recently branched out to human
clients. Pamela is a woman who is cagey about her past and
Kale finds himself drawn to her despite a strict belief in
a
platonic doctor-patient relationship. When two men burst
into his office looking for her, Kale throws himself into
protecting and claiming Pamela as his own, doing the one
thing he swore never to do—get involved.
