Allie and her two best friends, Rob and Juliet all have
Xeroderma Pigmentosum, better known as XP. They are all
allergic to the sun. They can only come out after dark.
People with this disease do not live to be old.
Allie, Rob, and Juliet have had this all their lives.
Allie's parents found out before she was even born. The
trio has decided that this is not going to get them down.
They do all the same thing as the average person except at
night.
Their newest venture is climbing walls and jumping
buildings. One night when she was climbing down a building,
Allie
sees what seems to be a murder. Her friends think she is
nuts, but Allie knows what she saw that night. As much as
Allie wants to ignore this, other strange things start
occurring.
Jacquelyn Mitchard books are very intense. I have to say
WHAT WE SAW AT NIGHT
started out slow; I actually put it down and just picked it
up again yesterday. Once I started reading WHAT WE SAW AT
NIGH again, I
just couldn't put it down. Mitchard talks about what
these kids have to go though, just to make it though a day.
Jacquelyn Mitchard kept me guessing though the whole book.
I was
starting to have doubts about what Allie had seen. Was she
just imaging these things or where they really happening.
In parts I felt very sorry for the characters. I can't even
image what someone with this disease along with their family
have to go though to keep them safe from the sunlight.
WHAT WE SAW AT NIGHT is a great book, like I said it starts
out slow, but you get
locked into it.
Allie Kim suffers from Xeroderma Pigmentosum: a fatal
allergy to sunlight that confines her and her two best
friends, Rob and Juliet, to the night. When freewheeling
Juliet takes up Parkour—the stunt-sport of scaling and
leaping off tall buildings—Allie and Rob have no choice but
to join her, if only to protect her. Though potentially
deadly, Parkour after dark makes Allie feel truly alive, and
for the first time equal to the “daytimers.”
On a random summer night, the trio catches a glimpse of what
appears to be murder. Allie alone takes it upon herself to
investigate, and the truth comes at an unthinkable price.
Navigating the shadowy world of specialized XP care, extreme
sports, and forbidden love, Allie ultimately uncovers a
secret that upends everything she believes about the people
she trusts the most.
