New Adult

Caroline Piasecki has broken up with her boyfriend of three years, feeling like there might be something or someone better out there for her. Then Caroline gets a text from her best friend, Bridget, that changes her life forever. Who thought three letters were capable of pulling out the solid ground that her shoes were firmly planted on.

Caroline is the victim of revenge porn. Nate had posted sex pictures on the internet of her, which include her name, home town, and where she is attending college. Her reputation as the nice college girl is destroyed. The friends she thought she had are gone. Her now promising future doesn't look good anymore. Caroline tries to keep a low profile, not drawing any more attention to herself. She also tires to make the pictures disappear, but no matter how hard she tries, they have a way of coming back. Her life is completely centered around making these pictures go away.

West Leavitt is the shady bad boy on campus. Leaving his Mom and sister to live with Bo, his mother's current boyfriend, he attends college to better provide for them in the future. He knows that it is only a matter of time before his Dad comes back into town and ruins his mother and Bo's relationship. The last thing West needs is to get involved with someone, especially, Caroline.

When West rises to defend her and punches Nate, he keeps telling himself that it wasn't for her but so that he didn't have to listen to Nate's mouth anymore. Like the rest of campus, he has seen the photos of her online. All he can think about is helping her, caring for her. He is struggling with not needing her in his life and not wanting to stay away from her.

Caroline's life has been so full of her school work and erasing the pictures of her, that she is struggling emotionally. Having no one to talk to, she seeks the shelter of her car and drives around when she cannot sleep at night. However, she ends up at the bakery where West is working. One night, he invites her in.

They work out a schedule where she comes to the bakery, hangs out, and helps West while they talk and West listens. Though Caroline and West tell each other that they aren't friends, they are both struggling with the intensifying feelings the each have for one another, until neither can ignore or pretend anymore.

Their relationship is a complicated one. West knows he can't keep Caroline forever. She knows that when he gets the call from home, he will leave. Caroline struggles to discover what she wants for herself, and her life. Since the pictures of her had been posted online, she has not really lived. She just exists in order to get them removed, and hopefully get on with her life. Since meeting West, something has happened to Caroline. She no longer hears the sneers and hurtful words of those around her. She no longer feels dirty or bad about herself. Her self-confidence has been restored and now feels she has the courage to fight back.

Robin York's DEEPER is a slower moving book but does not leave the reader bored or feeling that there are chapters just to fill in until the climax at the end. The characters are mature, honest, and loyal to one another. Revenge Porn or Non-consensual Pornography is a serious matter that is becoming increasingly popular in this day and age of new technology and instant gratification. Robin York takes this serious matter and sheds light on the ramifications of one's actions for posting online or giving the power to others to do so.

I really enjoyed DEEPER. However, I was not prepared for how this book affected me emotionally. The ending is a complete surprise. Although it was hinted at throughout the entire book, you were just hoping it didn't end up the way it did. The good news is that there is a book 2, Harder coming out in July 2014, which continues the story. I have to say that DEEPER is how a debut novel should be. It has everything that will have the reader looking for more. Robin York has certainly become another one of my gotta read authors.

SUMMARY

In this New Adult debut by Robin York, a college student is attacked online and must restore her name—and stay clear of a guy who’s wrong for her, but feels so right. When Caroline Piasecki’s ex-boyfriend posts their sex pictures on the Internet, it destroys her reputation as a nice college girl. Suddenly her once-promising future doesn’t look so bright. Caroline tries to make the pictures disappear, hoping time will bury her shame. Then a guy she barely knows rises to her defense and punches her ex to the ground. West Leavitt is the last person Caroline needs in her life. Everyone knows he’s shady. Still, Caroline is drawn to his confidence and swagger—even after promising her dad she’ll keep her distance. On late, sleepless nights, Caroline starts wandering into the bakery where West works. They hang out, they talk, they listen. Though Caroline and West tell each other they’re “just friends,” their feelings intensify until it becomes impossible to pretend. The more complicated her relationship with West gets, the harder Caroline has to struggle to discover what she wants for herself—and the easier it becomes to find the courage she needs to fight back against the people who would judge her. When all seems lost, sometimes the only place to go is deeper.
