Western | Romance Contemporary

Lizzie Baron can't believe her bad luck. The one time she has a one-night-stand, careful as they were, she's ended up pregnant. This should be the happiest time of her life, but the Texan bronc rider had moved on with the rodeo, of course. She seeks him out, feeling obliged to tell him she's having THE TEXAN'S BABY.

Christopher Miller has won a few titles but rodeo is only a hobby; he's an engineer. He's not the sort to be surrounded by adoring buckle bunnies. So Lizzie showing up on his doorstep gives him a shock. Neither of them was looking for a relationship but Chris has to admire her courage. Then her father has an accident and is concussed and injured. Lizzie, stressed and weak from morning sickness as she hears the news, accepts Chris's gentlemanly offer to drive her to the hospital a few hours away in Dallas. While they politely get acquainted, Chris can't help feeling some resentment at the chaos made of his own plans. He never asked to be a father.

With domestic matters, morning sickness, food cravings and a management job, Lizzie has plenty on her plate. She's not looking to throw the complication of a new relationship into the mix. However, she bends the truth and tells her family she and Chris have been seeing each other. It'll make the news of the baby easier to impart. Their respective jobs do complicate matters. Lizzie's from an oil family, while Chris works for an alternative energy firm. However, the friendly feeling they'd felt that first time they met, seems to be still in place. Or is Lizzie right to suspect that Chris is picking up inside secrets from her about her firm?

I liked the characters and the way that they wanted to take responsibility for their actions. Energy is the burning question of the day and there are so many alternatives, now, that it makes sense for any firm to look at diversifying sources. Does that mean that traditional producers need to feel threatened and protective? Can't they be part of the solution? And what will it take for an unexpected baby to become a wanted one? This thoroughly enjoyable book by popular Canadian author Donna Alward is part of a linked miniseries called Texas Rodeo Barons by various authors. Meet the family in THE TEXAN'S BABY and look out for the next books to feature them.

SUMMARY

Unexpected Consequences

As a powerful Dallas oil executive, planning is what Lizzie Baron does best. But she certainly didn't plan on getting pregnant following one memorable night after a rodeo in Fort Worth. Now she needs to figure out how she's going to raise a baby with a man she barely knows.

Aspiring bronc rider Chris Miller always hoped he'd see Lizzie again, though not quite like this. The pregnancy is a surprise—and so is finding out she's a member of the powerful Baron clan—but the more Chris gets to know Lizzie, the more he realizes he wants to be with her. When Lizzie learns Chris works for a rival company, she feels betrayed. Can two perfect strangers trust each other enough to become the perfect family?
