Young Adult

Mary, Kat, and Lillia made it through the after effects of the Homecoming Dance relatively fine, at least in contrast to others. However, things still aren't good. Reeve doesn't seem to have changed much, and Rennie has only changed for the worse. The three girls concoct another plan to take them both down a few pegs: have Lillia break Reeve's heart. But just like last time, things don't always go as planned...

After reading the first book in this series, Burn for Burn, I was excited for this sequel. Excited, but I wasn't jumping out of my seat for it. After reading FIRE WITH FIRE, I'm not sure I will even be able to make it to the seat to jump out of until the next book gets here. Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian knock the plot-twist, high action and drama ball right out of the high school baseball field in this stunning and flooring sequel.

Though this is a longer book (my edition over 500 pages), it is such a quick read I flew through it in less than a day. The intelligent plotting and excitement put in this book are absolutely wonderful. It builds and builds until the very end that had me staring at the book for a solid ten minutes in utter shock. While there were hints along the way (subtle ones, but ones that made room for the logic in it), I can't remember the last time a plot twist shocked me so much. Han and Vivian deserve a trophy or some sort of sparkly medal for the punch to the gut they deliver with that ending.

Next to the ending, my favorite part in this book is surprisingly found in the relationship between Lillia and Reeve. Reeve is stubborn, more than a little self-absorbed, and sometimes a complete rear end in the personality department, but I can't not love him. The slow emergence you see of his softer the side sends you straight to crush central. The absolute blooming of Lillia's personality shines right off the page as she attempts to break his heart, and the level that I root for them is outrageous. Brilliant character development in them both constructed through their relationship with each other.

After loving this book so much, I can only eagerly and definitely not patiently wait for the next book. If you enjoy the series Pretty Little Liars or anything high drama/suspense, then I would highly suggest trying this series.

SUMMARY

When sweet revenge turns sour… Book two of a trilogy from New York Times bestselling author Jenny Han and Siobhan Vivian.

Lillia, Kat, and Mary had the perfect plan. Work together in secret to take down the people who wronged them. But things didn’t exactly go the way they’d hoped at the Homecoming Dance.

Not even close.

For now, it looks like they got away with it. All they have to do is move on and pick up the pieces, forget there ever was a pact. But it’s not easy, not when Reeve is still a total jerk and Rennie’s meaner than she ever was before.

And then there’s sweet little Mary…she knows there’s something seriously wrong with her. If she can’t control her anger, she’s sure that someone will get hurt even worse than Reeve was. Mary understands now that it’s not just that Reeve bullied her—it’s that he made her love him.

Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, burn for a burn. A broken heart for a broken heart. The girls are up to the task. They’ll make Reeve fall in love with Lillia and then they will crush him. It’s the only way he’ll learn.

It seems once a fire is lit, the only thing you can do is let it burn...
