My first rule of thumb for buying a craft book is the answer to this question. Are there at least two items I think I'll make? Not just like the pretty picture of but truly put to needles. Well Lullaby Knits by Vibe Ulrik Sondergaard certainly passed this test.
For the most part the instructions are for somewhat experienced perhaps advanced beginner knitters taking into consideration the use of cable needles and multi-line patterns. Having said that since most of these are smaller garments, the majority for 3 to 24 months sizing, so what better way than try your hand at something more complicated than stockinet stitch or garter. Most work for either boy or girl even the one's specifically labeled for a particular sex. I love a cabled sweater for either a girl or boy and who says blue if just for boys. Needless to say color choices are always your own but it was a nice feature of this book to at times show an item in more than one color-way.
The designer also threw in some for the youngest child -- short and sweet with just enough detail to make it worthwhile tackling.
Big -- Big plus is the larger necklines or buttoned necks for easier on and off which is crucial with a little child which is so smart and forward thinking of Sondergaard.
Of course I have my favorites. The wide collar jacket could also be retrofitted with a zipper so be used as a change of season jacket. The generous collar adds just the right amount of pizzazz. Also love the garter stitch cardigan where the designer added a unique pattern which takes the garter a step further. Last but certainly not least in my little list is the hooded jacket. There is always room in a child's wardrobe for one of these.
For those of you that just run from the prospect of making buttonholes Vibe Ulrik Sondergaard includes some hints about them along with worthwhile ideas. In Lullaby Knits you will not find charted patterns which are not my preference so I was just fine with the designers written instructions. Lullaby Knits is available as a hard cover book and e-book which makes it so convenient.
