Inspirational Historical | Women's Fiction Historical

The Dawson family, Asa and his wife Clare, their son Matthew and his wife Jess and their widowed daughter Elizabeth Martin and her children J.T. and Ruth, have finally ended their trek along the Oregon Trail, but the adventure isn't over. Now it's time to make A HOME AT TRAIL'S END.

Eli Kincaid, their scout along the trail, has returned and asked Elizabeth to marry him and Elizabeth agrees. The children are thrilled but minor problems hold up the wedding. Eli needs to build a home for them but has to help the others with their housing first. And her best friend Malinda (widow to her late husband's brother) is planning her wedding to Will Bramford, another member of their train, and she doesn't want to complicate things for the people who will attend both weddings. On top of setting up their farms, they find they are also dealing with prejudices, a hell and brim-fire preacher, a little bit of petty jealousies as well as building up a new town and all the political problems that entails. The Dawson's and Kincaid's have a plan; they will work hard and leave the rest in God's hands.

A HOME AT TRAIL'S END is the final chapter to the Homeward on the Oregon Trail and I am personally saddened that this is true. I loved this family and the group of people that had traveled to the new land with them. As a reader I enjoyed the way they dealt with all the hardships on the trail and then with the settling into a new life. Author [Melody Carlson] has a way with storytelling that has you feeling involved with the trials and tribulations, the joys and sorrows that befall this family. If you haven't read this series, and enjoy a family based touch of the wild west that saw our country expanding, I certainly recommend all three -- Westward Hearts; A Dream for Tomorrow and of course A HOME AT TRAIL'S END.

SUMMARY

Bestselling author Melody Carlson (more than 5 million books sold) continues her Homeward on the Oregon Trail series with this third and final adventure. Elizabeth Martin and her two children have finally reached the Oregon Country. But Eli Kincade, the wagon train scout who captured her heart, has chosen to continue life on the trail. As other pioneer families begin building new homes, Elizabeth has never felt more alone. However, when Eli unexpectedly returns, confesses his love, and proposes, Elizabeth accepts with her family's blessing. A community begins to take shape, but not without growing pains. As an alternative to the local minister's fiery sermons, Elizabeth's father begins to preach at home, raising the ire of some. Racial biases arise against Brady, Elizabeth's African-American hired hand. Eli's warm sentiments toward Indians also raises concerns. Can Elizabeth and her family overcome these differences and begin a legacy of reconciliation and love? About This Series: The Homeward on the Oregon Trail series brings to life the challenges a young widow faces as she journeys west, settles her family in the Pacific Northwest, and helps create a new community among strong-willed and diverse pioneers.
