WEREWOLF IN ALASKA BY VICKI LEWIS THOMPSON shows that you
cannot always help who you fall in with, no matter the
species. Wilderness guide Jake Hunter and founder of WARM
(Werewolf Against Random Mating), is a staunch believer
that Weres should only mate and have sex with other Weres
and never humans. Imagine his surprise when he is shopping
in the local Polecat Alaska general store, and a
wonderful almond scent reaches his nose. It is coming from
a local wood carving artist and human, Rachel Miller. He
knows that name because he was just looking at her carvings
and asking the stores owner Ted about the artist. He has no
idea why she is hiding in another aisle and won't talk to
him about her art, but he figures she has a reason. The one
piece that jumps out to him is a beautiful black wolf with
vibrant green eyes and has a small white diamond design on
his forehead. Jake's wolf looks almost identical to this
wolf, but he knows this wolf is his father, who he lost
along with his mother a few years back in an avalanche. He
decides to purchase the piece and knows it will look
wonderful on his mantel above his fireplace. Jake has no
idea that he is the first person to purchase one of Rachel
Miller's carvings giving her the courage to peruse
carving as a full time career.
Fast forward three years later. Rachel is an
internationally known and highly sought after wood carving
artist, that has more work than she has time. But she still
finds time at night to spy (with her binoculars), on her
gorgeous neighbor across the lake, Jake, who likes to
skinny dip nightly in the summer. Jake who still cannot
forget Rachel, or her almond scent , likes to run in his
wolf form after it is full dark. It is on one his runs that
he smells a grizzly and knows that it is by Rachel's cabin.
With any luck the grizzly would not have a cub with her and
Rachel would be locked in her cabin, no such luck. He
fights the grizzly and convinces mama that the women is not
out to hurt her cub, but he is hurt in the process. He is
to weak to make it back to his cabin and Rachel coxes him
into her cabin to take care of him. For the next 24 hrs he
is taken good care of and sets things in motion for the
rest of the book. From Jake coming home from a business
trip to San Francisco to find Rachel in his bed reading
Duncan MacDowell's book on shifters, to him explaining
shifters and their politics, to why Were's do not need
condoms. The explaining of no condoms is hilarious, and
leads to Jake logging into Sniffer and asking the condom
question and the answers he gets back. After the answers
come in, Rachel is satisfied and they head to Jakes bedroom
and the huge bed. Jakes realizes that as soon as he has
Rachel he will be a hypocrite. But he cannot help himself,
he has dreamed of this for 3 long years. He convinces
himself it is only sex and not a mating, that would totally
wrong.
There is so much about Jakes and Rachel's story that you
are going to like. There are times that I got a little sad,
because Jake is so against the human/Were mating. But
those are his beliefs and he wouldn't be Jake if he was
any other way. But in the end everything seems to work out
the way it should. If you are a fan of Ms. Thompson's,
especially her Werewolf's this is a must read. I enjoyed
WEREWOLF IN ALASKA immensely. I laughed, I cried and
couldn't put it down.
In Polecat, Alaska, Rachel Miller and Jake Hunter have a mutual admiration for each other—from across a lake. There’s nothing Rachel likes more than spying on the very fit wilderness guide when he skinny-dips each night. And Jake has always been curious about his reclusive artist neighbor. He even bought Rachel’s first wood carving: a wolf who looks suspiciously like him.... Jake is a werewolf, but not just any werewolf. He’s the founder of WARM (Werewolves Against Random Mating). And that means a human like Rachel is off-limits, no matter how attractive he finds her. But when Rachel is threatened by a bear, and Jake shifts to save her, their lives collide with an intense passion, one that could change everything they’ve ever felt about themselves—and each other....
I love all VLT books and this one Werewolf in Alaska, from the review I just read; sounds like another great book for her. Will purchase when it comes out. Her paperback reader, Lois (Lois Imel 6:16pm June 21, 2013)
