Literature and Fiction

In WALK ME HOME we meet Carly who is sixteen and feels everyone loves her sister Jen who is eleven, more than her. They start out on an adventure after learning of several tragic which effect their lives.

They live with their mother who has had several different boyfriends during the course of their young ives. One man Carly has always felt loved them all the most is Teddy. Teddy is a loser with a secret. He has never been able to hold down a job, but Carly doesn't mind because he always sticks up for her. After Teddy has lived with them for over 2 years things change. Their mom kicks Teddy out for another man Wade. Whose side of the story can Carly believe....her mother's or Teddy's?

When tragedy strikes and Carly realizes that she and Jen will be turned over to child services Carly decides that they should set out and find Teddy. So they start out on their adventure. They walk for days. Along the way, they have to steal food and sometimes clothing. Carly feels that they are not stealing because she is keeping track of everything in a black book with address of the people and the places where they have taken items.

After several days on the road, they come across an older woman named Delores. Will she change their lives for the good or will she turn the sisters against each other? Delores is Native American and it would have been interesting to read more of the culture, but this isn't really her story.

When Carly is most in need an older couple picks her up from the side of the road. Again, I wish that there had been a bit more about this couple, and why they would pick up a child who was on the side of the road.

There are many interesting people that Carly meets along the way and she learns something from all of them. Her experiences will help her along the way. The bond between sisters is a strong one. But how can Carly learn to live with her sister when she feels betrayed?

WALK ME HOME is good, but a little too long for me. I lost interest several times as it just seem to go on and on about nothing in particular. I feel that even though she makes you feel like you are walking along with the girls; certain things could have been left out to shorten the story.

Also, maybe an extra chapter to let you know how the characters lives change or stay the same.

SUMMARY

Since their mother’s sudden death, sixteen-year-old Carly and her eleven-year-old sister, Jen, have been walking and hitchhiking across the Southwest trying to find Teddy, the closest thing they have to a family. Carly desperately hopes Teddy will take them in and save them from going into foster care—and forgive them for the lies told by their mother.

But when the starving girls get caught stealing food on a Native American reservation, their journey gets put on hold. While the girls work off their debt, Carly becomes determined to travel onward—until Jen confesses a terrible secret that leaves both sisters wondering if they can ever trust again.

Set against the backdrop of the American Southwest, Walk Me Home and its resilient heroines will inspire readers and renew their faith in recovery and redemption.
