CRAZY by Amy Reed is the story of Isabel and Connor. They
meet at
summer camp and become friends. After camp they keep in
touch through
emails. Connor is falling in love with Isabel and Izzy is
falling over the cliff
of sanity. At times, their relationship is very close and
other times, very
destructive. Izzy suffers from bipolar disorder. Connor is
trying to help her
and at times Izzy is very selfish and mean to him. The
emails between the
two are open and honest and at times, painful to read.
Izzy's family life is a mess and most of the time she feels
very alone and
that no one cares. She is wrong about her friendship with
Connor though.
He refuses to give up on her so while she keeps pushing him
away, he
keeps trying to pull her in. Izzy is suffering from
depression and low self
esteem issues. When she goes off on these emotions, Connor
is always
there to pull her back down to reality. At times while
reading CRAZY I was
yelling at Connor to just walk away. She doesn't deserve
you! You are too
good for her. But as I read on, I realized that Izzy really
needed Connor's
friendship.
This is my first book by Amy Reed and I really loved it. I'm
now going to go
and find her other books and read those too. CRAZY was a
quick read for
me, most of the time, I couldn't put it down. I had to see
how it was going to
end. CRAZY will make you happy and sad as you read it. At
times, I was
holding my breath and didn't even realize it. CRAZY is
intense at some
parts as you will find when you read it. It opened my eyes
to bipolar
disorder and gave me great compassion to those suffering
from it. CRAZY
will grab you right from page one and never let you go. Amy
does a great
job of telling a story dealing with bipolar and makes the
characters come
alive for you through their emails.
Connor and Izzy, two teens who met at a summer art camp in
the Pacific Northwest where they were counsellors, share a
series of emails in which they confide in one another,
eventally causing Connor to become worried when he realizes
that Izzy's emotional highs and lows are too extreme.
