Brenna Spector is a private investigator with a very special
ability. Her memory is perfect and she never, ever forgets
anything. This comes from a neurological disorder that
causes her to have perfect recall of any moment in her past.
The one exception to this is the day her older sister, Clea,
disappeared. She can remember bits and pieces of that day
but not enough that has ever helped to find her.
It can be a huge help to remember everything without ever
writing it down when you're a private investigator. But it
also intrudes when you're trying to lead as normal a life as
possible. Brenna has an ex-husband that she kind of still
loves but he's remarried now. She also has a 13 year old
daughter named Maya who has her mother's independence. Then
there's Brenna's assistant Trent who sees himself as a god
among men. While annoying, he's also an expert with
computers and a very loyal friend.
Trent has taken on a case for himself and Brenna involving a
missing person. The person missing is named Lula Belle and
she calls herself an artist. A lot of people would call it
porn. Lula Belle is a shadow only and no one can see her
face. What she does give her website subscribers are a lot
of very sensual and flexible poses while telling stories
from her past in a mesmerizing southern accent. Men are so
drawn in by this woman that there's a minor Internet wide
panic when she suddenly disappears.
Brenna's ex-boss, the obnoxious Errol Ludlow, has contacted
Trent to get Brenna in on the search. At first Brenna says
no. Then Trent shows her one of the videos of Lula Belle in
action. That's all it takes for Brenna to change her mind.
The story that Lula Belle is telling is one from Brenna's
own childhood; a story that only she and her missing sister,
Clea, would know. Convinced that Lula Belle is somehow tied
to Clea, she takes on the case.
Before it's over, there will be another missing person who
may or may not have left with Lula Belle, a secretive talent
agent, and a murderous beauty on the loose. Brenna can't
throw in the towel on this one, though. It's the closest
that she's ever been to discovering what happened to her
sister.
Then, there's Detective Nick Morasco who she may or may not
want as a more important part of her life. There are just
too many things to figure out and Brenna has to see it all
through. But how many people have to die before she finds
the solution?
INTO THE DARK is the second Brenna Spector novel and I'm
hoping there will be many more of them. Brenna is totally
someone I would love to hang out with as long as she wasn't
in the middle of a deadly case. Trent is so ridiculously
loveable and you'll recognize men that you've known in him.
Peppered with snappy dialogue and plenty of flashbacks, INTO
THE DARK will have you on the edge of your seat as you're
propelled toward a real twister of an ending.
Can a stranger share your memories? That's the question that haunts Brenna Spector when she first sees footage of missing webcam performer Lula Belle. Naked but hidden in shadow, the "performance artist" shares her deepest, darkest secrets with her unseen male audience . . . secrets that, to Brenna, are chillingly familiar. Brenna has perfect memory, able to recall in astonishing detail every moment of every day of her adult life. But her childhood—those carefree years before the traumatic disappearance of her sister, Clea—is frustratingly vague. When Brenna listens to the stories Lula Belle tells her audience, stories only Brenna and Clea could know, those years come to life again in vivid detail. Convinced the missing internet performer has ties to her sister, Brenna takes the case—and in her quest for Lula Belle unravels a web of obsession, sex, guilt, and murder that could regain her family . . . or cost her life.
