Allie Beckstrom and her soul mate Zayvion are "soul
complements", strengthened together with magical powers.
United they are intent on tracking down the illegal spells
to cure the poisoned magic in the world. Portland is being
threatened by the dead Isabelle and Leander, who have
possessed a body for their purpose of taking over the world
of dark and light magic.
Allie has been given the charge of leading the others of
the Authority in saving the world from Isabelle and Leander,
whose objective is to eliminate all other soul complements
in gaining their goal of taking over. Those possessing
various types of magic along with Allie, Zayvion, her hounds
and one gargoyle, strike out to fight the elements of
explosion and the earth splitting with fire and bolts of
magical lightning. The main task of closing off the magical
wells surrounding Portland is a task greater than imagined,
with everyone barely escaping with their lives at the final
well and their show down with Isabelle and Leander. Brought
back from the dead with Zayvion at her side, Allie learns
her dead father has kept secrets from her, even while
possessing her mind and sharing her body throughout the
fight, that you can gain "magic for a price".
MAGIC FOR A PRICE is the first of the series I have read. I
found it
a little difficult to get my bearings together on what was
happening, but mid-way through it began to come together.
The various terms were those I had not related to before and
would probably have been easier had I read previous books in
this series. I will say that it holds all the excitement
and imagination that anyone could wish for. From life to
death and again to life, the unexpected becomes the expected
in this tale.
For most of her life, Allison Beckstrom has used magic and
accepted the heavy price it exacts. But now that all magic
is poisoned, it’s no longer just using people—it’s killing them.
With Portland about to descend into chaos, Allie needs to
find a way to purify the wells of tainted magic beneath the
city. But the only options left to her are grim: attempt to
close down magic forever, or follow her father’s plan to set
magic into the right hands—even though she’s learned to
never trust his word.
Now, Allie will have to make a choice and face the darkness
of her own deepest fears, before time runs out for them all…
