Calliope Jenkins, former band singer and now private
detective, gets a very strange call from her partner and
former lover, Josh White. He tells her he's still out
taking care of something that he needs to fix. He asks her
to call his wife and then reassures Callie that she(meaning
Callie) will be all right but to be sure to look out for
HIDDEN THINGS.
The problem with the call is that it came after Josh White
was found dead and the police are saying they suspect foul
play. From that point on things get even crazier. Callie
refuses to believe he is dead so with the help of a new
sidekick that she's not sure how she picked up she heads to
a place she never planned to see again.
She had left her home state of Iowa at 16 to become a
singer and had not seen her family since that day. Once she
had almost gotten Josh to meet them then in a panic turned
back 10 minutes from their home. A short time after she and
Josh broke up.
In seeking the truth about Josh, Callie managed to find
herself and a lot of answers that she had no idea she was
looking for. She sees things and feels things that aren't
real... or are they? There no such thing as ghosts, trolls
and please... dragons that will fly you places that don't
really exist.
I found HIDDEN THINGS filled with funny moments,
unbelievable things that you just had to believe in and
forgiveness. It has a magic of its own that keeps you
reading as you put yourself in Callie's place and decide
what you would do if you had the chance to go through
everything she did. I'm not sure I could take it all as
calmly as she did and to know when it was time to say
goodbye to someone you love and to embrace the HIDDEN
THINGS of life.
Watch out for the hidden things... That's the last thing Calliope Jenkins' best friend and former lover says to her before ending a 2 a.m. phone call from Iowa, where he's investigating a case she knows little about. Five hours later, she gets another call, this time from the police. Josh has been found dead, and foul play is suspected. Calliope is stunned. Especially when Josh leaves a message on her phone a few hours later. Spurred by grief and suspicion, she heads to Iowa herself, accompanied by a stranger who claims to know something about what happened to Josh and who can-maybe-help Calli get him back. The road home is not quite the straight shot she imagined. Josh was involved in something a lot more complicated than a teenage runaway or a deadbeat dad, and Calliope finds herself on a surreal road trip into-and behind-America's heartland, hounded by magical beings twisted by living too long just-out-of-sight, and the secret bogeymen in Calliope's own troubled past. It's a search for the truth about her friend's death and the road she needs to walk if she ever wants to stand on her own. If Calli's not careful, her worst teenage nightmares could come true: she might never make it out.
