PUBLISH LIKE THE PROS: A BRIEF GUIDE TO QUALITY SELF-
PUBLISHING by Michele DeFilippo gives a step by step
process of how to produce a professional looking self-
published book in six steps. The tips are straightforward,
well defined, and easy to understand. She walks you through
the importance of cover designs, manuscript editing,
interior layout, proofreading, corrections and final
reviews, and digital file prep with knowledgeable,
practical examples and advice.
As Michele DeFilippo owns 1106 Design she knows what goes
into self-publishing. 1106 offers a full assortment of
services to help the writer looking to publish; cover
design, interior design and eBooks, typesetting,
proofreading, editorial services, book marketing, press
release kits, publishing and distribution, and more.
The book is informative and reads quickly, but you can
download a free digital copy of this book directly from the
1106 Design's website. The chapters read like a collection
of promotional articles for 1106 Design's services. I'm not
saying they weren't helpful or that 1106 Design is one of
those self-publishing companies that Ms. DeFilippo warns
authors about, but when a book is so blatantly pushing
their own product it's harder to trust the information
given.
My first instinct is that this book should have been given
freely on their website as an eBook, which they've done, or
as a series of articles on their website, or even given
over time through a newsletter. I don't see the need for
the print format. It strikes me as mercenary. Ms. DeFilippo
would argue that multiple formats will reach multiple
audiences and this is certainly true in most cases. Not
this one because it damages the trust between the audience
and the company/author.
If you're interested in self-publishing, by all means read
this book. It's easy to follow and the examples and
breakdown of events are explained with clarity and
knowledge.
